Sesshōmaru (殺生丸, Sesshomaru?) is a character and antihero of the manga and anime Inuyasha, where he is the brother of the protagonist, Inuyasha.

Sessho is Japanese for "murder"; while Maru is a suffix that was formerly added to words to indicate that they were being used as proper nouns without altering their original meaning.

Sesshōmaru has been described as a very handsome character, due to his long hair, white skin and smooth appearance, not to mention his extremely sharp claws and some details such as his blue-purple moon and violet stripes on her cheeks and over her eyes which are actually permanent features of her skin. His true demon form is that of a giant white dog, named Yako, although it is very strange that he takes this form, since in it he unleashes all his power and he does not find someone worthy of a battle in his opinion. Serious.

Sesshōmaru wears a white masculine kimono, over which he wears spiked steel armor, wears a yellow obi at his waist in which he carries Tenseiga, Tōkijin (before it was destroyed) and Bakusaiga; On his right shoulder he wears his white stole (Mokomoko) which is part of his body but is not his tail, as was thought. The function of it comes to resemble that of a shield.

History

Sesshōmaru is a powerful demon (daiyōkai, literally great yōkai). He frequently appears aloof and indifferent and rarely shows any emotion beyond a little disgust or dissatisfaction. He considers himself a superior being and is cruel to other people, despite the fact that he is protective of his followers. He doesn't care much for others and thinks of humans as mere mortals, sometimes disgusting and unimportant. He wishes to become even stronger than he is, although he is already strong enough, even much stronger than Naraku, the main villain. of history. He believes that fighting is the only way to survive and despises his half brother Inuyasha for being half human and half beast, and because of his human mother Izayoi, her father dies trying to save her, which makes him weak. just like humans. Sesshomaru hated Inuyasha for some time because he felt betrayed since Inuyasha did not go to the war that took place to reclaim the territory that belonged to his father because he was trapped in the tree by Kikyo's arrow. Inuyasha possesses the powerful Tessaiga (translated into Spanish as "Steel Fang"), a sword made from one of his father's fangs that can kill 1000 demons in one move and has the ability to be modified by bathing it with the blood of his enemies (as seen in various chapters) is how he obtains techniques such as Bakuryuha and the Meido Zangetzuha.

Although Sesshōmaru possesses Tenseiga (translated into English as "Sacred Fang"), another sword made from one of his father's fangs, which is capable of restoring his life to 1000 people with a simple movement and open the gate to the underworld with a single swing, this weapon is unable to hurt the opponent in battle so Sesshōmaru despises it. Finally Sesshōmaru used the power of Tenseiga to revive Goshinki's head so that Kaijinbo could forge the evil sword Tōkijin from his fangs. Tokijin is a sword capable of killing, with even more power than his brother's own Tessaiga and due to its immense power it is only controllable by Sesshōmaru himself. i> although in a fight against Moryomaru Tokijin it breaks.

Sesshomaru later obtains a new sword called the Bakusaiga, which he recovered along with his left arm previously lost in battle against Inuyasha.

At the beginning of the series Sesshōmaru searches for the Tessaiga, since his father, a large dog demon, hid it well from both brothers for some time and put a magical barrier on it that repels anyone. any evil being that holds it. For this reason Sesshōmaru is unable to use the weapon. However, even knowing that he can't touch it, Sesshōmaru still wanted to take it from Inuyasha, because he feels that a being that is only half-demon doesn't deserve to possess it. For this reason Sesshōmaru faces Inuyasha in the grave of his father; when he is able to transform the sword for the first time, he manages to cut off Sesshōmaru's left arm. After Sesshōmaru obtained the sword Tokijin , he seems to have lost interest in Tessaiga .

Sesshōmaru is accompanied by a little demon named Jaken and later by a little girl named Rin (in Latin America she was given the name Lin), who by reciprocity was brought back to life by Sesshōmaru, using Tenseiga . It is believed that Sesshōmaru could have saved Rin because he provided her with food and water when he was recovering from a fight with Inuyasha, shortly after losing his arm, even though he refused food, it was clear that he began to care for her (as noted in some episodes).

He is also followed by a two-headed dragon named Ah-Un (阿吽) who frequently carries Rin. Even so, Sesshōmaru has always disputed opinions about his attachment to Rin, claiming that he only resurrected her as an experiment to learn the capabilities of his sword, that she is the one who follows him and that her revenge against whoever hurts him is only to punish the audacity of getting so close to him with bad intentions. But from episode 466 to 471 of the manga where Sesshomaru goes to the underworld, he shows how much he cares for Rin.

Although Sesshōmaru maintains a cool demeanor, not seeming to care what happens, the fact that he keeps Rin close to him is proof of his growing compassion. He not only tolerates a human, but saves her whenever her life is in danger. Later in the series Naraku uses Kagura to kidnap Rin in a plan to seize Sesshōmaru's powers. This plan failed and when Naraku attempted to escape, an enraged Sesshōmaru attempted to go after him, but upon hearing that Rin's life was in danger, he let him escape and rescued Rin.

When he was going to the mountain of the souls (Mt. Hakurei) Sesshōmaru saves Kagome, Miroku and Sango from Mukotsu, a member of the Shichinintai (七人隊), who uses poisons, however Sesshōmaru only declared & #34;I just took out someone who got in my way".

In the final chapters of the anime series, it is revealed that there was a woman who loved Sesshōmaru, Sara (who does not exist in the manga). She allowed hundreds of demons to possess her body in order to steal Inuyasha's Tessaiga, as she believed the sword was Sesshōmaru's wish. Later he realized his mistake, but the demons would not set her free and Sesshōmaru using the Tessaiga performed a cutting wind (Kaze no Kizu) and freed Sara from the demons and then quoted: "Feel free to continue playing your flute in the afterlife".

It is important to mention that in later chapters of the series, Kagura, Naraku's creation, seems to be in love with him but under the circumstances she is eliminated by Naraku himself by helping Kohaku, Sango's younger brother. Kagura, despite being sentenced to immense pain and agony at the end of her life, is visited on her deathbed by Sesshōmaru, who tries to save her with Tenseiga, which he finds impossible due to the shōki that Naraku had applied to her, since Kagura, coming from Naraku, was not human, but Yōkai. However, at the moment of vanishing and revealing her true nature (a gust of air and a white feather), Kagura smiles at him with complete sincerity (and in her mind says that she is happy to see him once more)..

Shortly after, he is visited by Tōtōsai, the blacksmith who created Tenseiga and Tessaiga, who tells him that the sword has noticed how something has changed inside, compassion for others. And that the sword itself, only used for good deeds, indicated that it was time to become a truly deadly weapon.

Sesshōmaru never admits in public that he cares about Rin or Jaken, but he does do so in his thoughts, using Tenseiga to defend "what matters to him" by Sounga in InuYasha the Movie 3: "Sword of Conquest" (映画犬夜叉 天下覇道の剣, Tenka Hadō no Ken ?) where both brothers can only achieve the power necessary to defeat their enemy by joining forces and powers. When the Sounga has InuYasha under her control and the massacres begin, Sesshōmaru tries to run and save Rin and Jaken before InuYasha cuts them down, though it is Kagome who saves them when she yells at InuYasha to "down" 34;. In the same way it can be seen that during the final battle Sounga attacks Inuyasha and Sesshōmaru, in an unconscious act, throws himself on him receiving the attack instead of his brother.

Later, (chaps. 469 - 471 of the manga) when Rin dies after falling into Hell, Sesshōmaru enters there with the purpose of rescuing her and then, learning that he cannot revive her again (Tenseiga has the power to revive a human just once), he feels devastated, his features fill with anger and pain (something very rare, since he always has a calm expression). He then realizes that his interest in increasing the power of Tenseiga is what led them both to hell and killed Rin, so he throws his sword aside, saying that if to increase the power of tenseiga Rin had to die, he did not want her by his side because nothing was worth more than Rin's life. After seeing these events, Sesshōmaru's mother, who was guiding her son in his search, asks Jaken if his son is sad, to which he answers that yes, and that Sesshōmaru by his nature could not cry, so he had to shed tears for Sesshōmaru, since his position did not allow it. His mother then says that she will do something for the one time and manages to bring Rin back to life. When Rin wakes up, Sesshōmaru caresses his face, showing himself completely happy to see the human awake, while his mother comments that she has transformed like his father, in the most "strange" way;, implying his love for a human.

In one of the last chapters of the manga (chapter 518, volume 52), Sesshōmaru recovers his left arm by creating a sword from his own strength (since Tenseiga is an inheritance from his father) which he calls Bakusaiga, which resided within him, and would not appear until he forgot about Steel Fang. In this way, he surpasses his father.

In Inuyasha's final chapter (ch. 558 and final; "Tomorrow") Sesshōmaru, despite his newfound compassion, is visibly angry at being called &# 34;Brother-in-law" On Kagome's part, despite this, when Jaken suggests killing that girl who dared to call him that (as a form of disrespect), Sesshomaru only tells her: shut up or I'll kill you. Making it clear that he doesn't care. It is also known that Rin has been left in Kaede's custody, according to Inuyasha, to practice with humans or whatever Rin chooses; Inuyasha mentions that when the time comes, Rin will choose whether she goes with Sesshomaru or stays in the village; while Sesshōmaru visits her carrying with him some present for her, which indicates that he is still aware of her care.

Skills

  • Super strength and speed: It is natural that as a demon Sesshōmaru possesses an extraordinarily developed strength and speed.
  • Flight: Ability to levitate in the air is one of the abilities of its true form, which, like others, preserves in its human form.
  • Demonic power: This allows you not to be controlled by any sword and break conjures, among many other things; for example when the transformation begins to its true form, the demonic power creates wind and sometimes even throw objects (in episode 7 of the anime), or when the monks who kidnap Rhine try to control it using rosaries, these cannot contain the demonic power of Sesshōmaru and break (in episode 162).
  • Reviv and Sanar: Sesshōmaru uses Tenseiga (Sacred Colmillo). To pulverize ghosts and destroy beings from the other world, it can also revive and heal. To revive people, Sesshōmaru must concentrate on seeing the devils messengers of the other world and ending them.
  • Longevity: His age is unknown. But he's definitely over 2000 years old. This is shown in film 3 where Sesshomaru speaks to his Father 700 years ago of Inuyasha's story, just when Inuyasha was a newborn, although to determine that it is necessary to know the age of Sesshomaru when he spoke to his father for the last time.
  • Real form: Sesshōmaru, like his father, is able to become a gigantic white dog demon. In this way His strength increases enormously, and although he retains all his skills, he only uses his claws and his fangs to attack.
  • Materialization: One of its most common attacks is that from the tip of its index and medium fingers it materializes a whip or tape made of energy, which can hit, hold or cut, Sesshōmaru is even able to kill with it very powerful creatures of one blow.

Objects

  • Get up.: The Tenseiga (Holy Colmillo) is a weapon inherited from his father and is able to cut off beings from the other world, also relive the dead and heal the living. He does it by letting Sesshōmaru see the messenger demons of the other world and destroy them. In extreme cases this sword is able to protect Sesshōmaru's life if he is in danger. Tenseiga cannot hurt the living beings, however after the Tokijin split, Totosai reinforced the Tenseiga, giving it the ability to use the Meidou Zangetsuha (Infernal Line), an attack that allows to send the enemy directly to hell, almost at the end of the Sesshōmaru series finally understands why his father had left the Tenseiga to him and once he was cut off. However, the power of the colmillo is limited and cannot resurrect someone who has been revived before, either by the power of the sword, as in the case of Rin or by a foreign power, like Kohaku who revived thanks to the power of a fragment of the pearl of Shikon.
  • Tōkijin: Sesshōmaru also possesses a sword made with the fangs of a demon called Goshinki, an extension of Naraku (whose appearance, not expected for a being of his class, is because it shows to be what is not). Although Goshinki was a common demon, Tokijin's power is superior to the Inuyasha Steel Colmillo sword as it was created by Kaijinbo with a denture that could break Inuyasha's sword from a bite. Tokijin can shoot concentrated energy directly to the opponent, which resembles a bit to the wind cutter of the Steel Colmillo. Everyone who pushes this sword is possessed by the evil energy emanating from it becoming mindless beings at his service, only Sesshōmaru has demonstrated the mental power necessary to be able to control it without problems.
  • Bakusaiga (Explosion ring): It is the most recent sword of Sesshōmaru. Unlike the sword Colmillo of steel, this is not a heritage of his father, if not a sword of Sesshōmaru that would only appear when he forgot Steel Colmillo. Bakusaiga can destroy yōkais, whatever, and has the special ability to extend the damage of their attack until they fall apart, this is better observed when fighting Naraku, by cutting parts of his body the destruction spread to healthy parts and in this way it was that Naraku was no longer able to regenerate his body and is destroyed, it is the most powerful weapon of the whole series.
  • Poison: Like any other powerful demon Sesshōmaru can release a very powerful poison that can kill both humans and monsters.
