Sergeant Major is a military rank.
Between the 16th and 17th centuries
Initially second in command to the colonel in a colonelía, the sergeant major became immediately below the maestre de campo after the creation of the tercios in 1534 until 1600.
He was in charge of the tactical instruction, security and accommodation of the troops of the tercio. He also transmitted the orders of the master of the field or the captain general to the lower officers.
In the 19th century
- In Argentina, since the law promulgated in 1813, where the grades were divided into three groups: General Officers, Chief Officials and Officers; the rank of Chief Sergeant was ranked in Chief Officers, immediately superior to captain—pertaining officers—and immediately lower than Lieutenant Colonel and lower than Colonel, from which the group of General Officers was already promoted.

- In Colombia, the senior sergeant is the highest degree within the military forces and the National Police officers, who are immediately superior to that of sergeant first. At the Executive Level of the National Police, it is equivalent to the level of Commissioner
In the Colombian Military Forces there are three grades of sergeant major:
- Major Joint Command Sergeant, there will only be one in the country for all military forces.
- Major Command Sergeant, they will be appointed for divisions and brigades as command advisors.
- Senior sergeant, they will be appointed for tactical units, as adviser to battalion commander or tactical unit.
