The origin of the national flag of Senegal stems from the extinct Federation of Mali, whose flag was identical but had a stylized black human figure instead of the green star. The flag consists of tricolor vertical bands of equal dimensions, with the traditional Pan-African colors: green (next to the mast), yellow and red. The flag in its current form was officially adopted on August 20, 1960.

Symbolism

Green has three reasons to know its meaning: for the Muslim population it symbolizes Islam, for Christians it symbolizes hope and for atheism, it can represent fertility, yellow symbolizes mineral wealth and the colors of art, literature and the intellectuals and finally red symbolizes the color of life, blood and sacrifice of the nation and the determined fight against underdevelopment.[citation needed]
