Semyazza (Hebrew: שמיחזה, Greek: Σεμιαζά; also Semihazah, Shemyazaz, Sêmîazâz, Semjaza, Samjâzâ, Shemihaza, Shemhazai) is a fallen angel, chief of the two hundred fallen angels according to the epigraphic Book of Enoch 6:3 and belonging to the Grigori, the 'Watching' angels. He is said to hang between the Earth and the Sky, and forms the constellation of Orion.

The sins of Semyazza and his associates

In the Book of Enoch or "1 Enoch" (century III-century I BC) he is presented as the leader of a group of angels called "Grigori" (in Greek: egrḗgoroi, in Aramaic עִיר ‛irín, those who 'open their eyes', 'awaken', 'observe', 'watch';) that due to their desire and passion for women they became fallen angels.

Semyaza, his boss, said to them, "I'm afraid you don't want such an action to be executed and it's just me who pays for sin size." They all replied, "Let us swear and commit ourselves under anathema among us not to change this decision and to execute it certainly." Then they all swore together and committed themselves to it under anathema. There were two hundred who went down to Ardis, which is the top of Mount Hermon, whom they called, because in him they swore and committed themselves under anathema. (Book of Enoc, 6: 3-6).

Mount Hermon was called Senir by the Amorites and Sirion by the Phoenicians (Deuteronomy 3:9; < span class="plainlinks">Psalms 29:6; Chronicles 5:23; Song of Solomon 4:8; Ezekiel 27:5), names that appear in Ugaritic texts found in Ras Shamra, Syria, and in documents from Bogazkoi, Turkey. The mountain was considered the northern boundary with the mountain known as "Mount Ba'al Hermon" (Judges 3:3), located about 30 kilometers southwest of Jerusalem and more than 900 meters above sea level. It is also called "Mount Siyon" in Deuteronomy 4:48.

A complete list of the group's leaders can be found in the Book of Enoch 6:7. According to the book of Enoch Semyazza convinced other Grigori to join him in fornicating with women. As a result, he and the other sinful Grigori fathered giants "each of three thousand cubits in size" (Enoch 7:2), called in Genesis Nephilim a word that means "the fallen", or "those who cause to fall" (from the Hebrew נָפַל "nafál": fall, knock down), who dominated and ate both beasts and humans (Enoch 7:3-5). Another sin of the Watchers was teaching various humans creative arts and occult sciences - most notably Asahel, who taught them the secrets of war, which filled the earth with violence and caused God's wrath (Enoch 8:1).

God sent the angel Gabriel because of the Giants to make war with them:

And the Lord said to Gabriel, Go to them, to those bastards, reprobates and born of fornication, and annihilate these and the children of the watchers from among men. Get them out, stir them up against each other, that they themselves will destroy themselves fighting, for they will not be long their days. And they shall all pray thee for their children, but nothing shall be given to their fathers, for they have waited to live almost eternally; that every one of them should live five hundred years. (Book of Enoch, 10:9, 10).
Now, the giants born of the spirits and of the flesh will be called evil spirits on the earth and upon it will have their habitation. Bad spirits have come out of their flesh, for from above they were created and of holy watchers was their beginning and their first foundation. Evil spirit shall be upon the earth, and evil spirits shall be called. The spirits of the heavens shall have their habitation, and the spirits of the earth, which are born upon the earth, in it shall have their habitation. The spirits of the giants, the nefilim, oppress, corrupt, attack, fight, destroy the earth and bring sorrow; nothing that they eat is enough for them, nor when they have thirst is there. And these spirits are lifted up against the sons of men and on the women, for they came out of them. (Book of Enoch, 15:8-12).

Finally, the sentence of Semyazza's associates is described.

And to Michael the Lord said, "Go, tell Semyaza and the others who are with him, those who joined the women to corrupt themselves with them in all their clumsiness. And when all their children have been annihilated and have seen the perdition of their predilects, feed them for seventy generations under the hills of the earth until the day of their final judgment, until the eternal judgment is fulfilled. In that day they will be sent to the abyss of fire, to torment, and will be chained in prison forever. Then, from that moment, he will burn and undone himself together with them, and they will be bound to the consummation of generations. (Book of Enoch, 10:11-16).

After the destruction of the Giants, God caused the Universal Flood to destroy humans who had become corrupted. Except for Noah, his family and the seven individuals of each species of "kosher" animals and birds (ritually 'appropriate' in Hebrew law) and one pair of each species of "non-kosher" animals and birds » (i.e. "not appropriate" in Hebrew ritual law).

Linkage with Satan

Some suggest that Semyazza would be another name for Satan (Heb: 'adversary'), who according to Christian theology was originally an angel created in the service of God, but who later fell into apostasy and, According to some traditions, he was expelled from heaven. Jesus claims that he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven in Luke 10:18.

In Judaism, however, "Satan" (opponent, resister) is just a generic name that the Tanach (Old Testament) would call the angels who act as prosecutors or "opponents" of sinners. In Judaism, a primordial expulsion of Satan from heaven has never occurred and the book of Enoch is seen as a pseudepigraphic book outside the canon and without divine inspiration.

Some commentators say that Semyazza should not be confused with another name for Satan, who some believe was "cast out" from the heavens previously according to an interpretation of Revelation 12 (for example, see William Barclay, New Testament Commentary, Clie Publishing, 1995). According to the Muslim version, the reason for Satan's exile would have been his refusal to bow down to Adam (Al-Curan Taa-Haa: 116). So for theorists it would be two separate falls from heaven, one from Satan, the other from the "Watchers" who had wanted to go down to earth to take human wives.

In satanic cults, it is considered one of the main demons that makes up a demonic trinity along with Lucifer and Samael.

In popular culture

A summon (aeon) from the video game Final Fantasy XII is called Shemhazai.

A song by the group Daemonarch is titled "Samyaza".

Actor Nick Nolte portrays Samyazza in the epic film "Noah" (Noah) by Darren Aronofsky, released in March 2014.

The video game El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is mentioned as the leader of the Gregori who stole the fruits of knowledge and keep men under a false evolution. Although it is implied that he will be the final enemy of the game, it is discovered that he died while escaping from heaven.

In the biblical video game LOGOS is the final enemy of Noah's chapter and the one who sends his son, Hiwa, to destroy the ark in a fit of rage.

In the novel 36 Hours, the nocturnals led by Dyango seek to free Semyazza from his stellar prison with a spell that stops the rotation of the earth.
