Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association of America
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association of America —in English: Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America—, best known for Its acronym SFWA, is made up of science fiction and fantasy writers. Its members are not restricted to American authors: it is open to all writers in the world with a certain number of works published in the US market. Thus, it counts among its ranks some of the most notable current authors of these two genres. The most important activity of the association is the annual delivery of the Nebula awards, as well as the prestigious Grand Master award.
The association was founded in 1965 by Damon Knight, who also served as its first president until 1967. Since then, well-known writers such as Robert Silverberg (1967-1968), Gordon R. Dickson (1969-1971) have carried out this important task, Poul Anderson (1972-1973), Jerry Pournelle (1973-1974), Frederik Pohl (1974-1976), Jack Williamson (1978-1980), Norman Spinrad (1980-1982 and again 2001-2002), Charles Sheffield (1984 -1986), Greg Bear (1988-1990), Ben Bova (1990-1992), Joe Haldeman (1992-1994) or Robert J. Sawyer (1998).
