Schismus is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family. It is native to Africa, the Mediterranean to western India.

Etymology

The generic name derives from the Greek schisma (slit), referring to the tip of the lemma.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 6, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 12 diploid.
