Scaled Composites

Scaled Composites often abbreviated to Scaled is an aerospace company owned by Northrop Grumman since 2007 that was founded in 1982 in Mojave, California by famed aircraft designer Burt Rutan and formerly called Rutan Aircraft Factory. The company was founded to develop experimental aircraft, but is currently focused on the design and development of concept aircraft and prototype manufacturing processes for aircraft and other vehicles. It is known for interesting designs and its use of non-metallic composite materials.

On April 1, 2004, the US Department of Transportation authorized the company it listed as the world's first to have a license for sub-orbital manned flight. The license was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration's Office of Commercial Space Transportation, which had supported licenses for more than 150 commercial launches of unmanned vehicles during its 20 years of existence, but never a license for manned flight on a sub-orbital trajectory. Mojave Airport, which operates part-time as Mojave Spaceport, was the launch point for SpaceShipOne. SpaceShipOne carried out the first privately manned sub-orbital spaceflight on June 21, 2004.
