Sayonara is a 1957 film directed by Joshua Logan based on the novel of the same name by American writer James A. Michener. The film won four Academy Awards out of ten nominations it had.

Synopsis

Lloyd Gruver (Marlon Brando) is a US Air Force officer stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Like many other American soldiers, he falls in love with a Japanese woman he wants to marry. However, the army puts all possible impediments to prevent this marriage.

Curiosity

The year before, Brando had starred in another film about relations between the Japanese and the US military, The Teahouse of the August Moon, but this time he had played the role of a Japanese.
