Sartidia is a genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to South Africa. It comprises 5 described and accepted species.

Description

They are perennial plants; densely tufted, with stems 80-200 cm tall; herbaceous; not branched. Culm nodes glabrous. solid internodes. Disarmed plants. Young leaf buds are not basally aggregated; linear sheets; narrow; 2-4 mm wide; laminated; not pseudopetiolate; without venation; persistent; laminated in bud. Ligule with a fringed membrane, or a fringe of hairs; truncated; 0.3-1 mm long, contraligula present (as a line of hairs, in S. jucunda), or absent. Bisexual plants, with bisexual spikelets; with hermaphrodite flowers. The inflorescences are paniculate; open; spataceae.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Bernard De Winter and published in Kirkia 3: 137. 1963. The type species is: Sartidia angolensis (C.E.Hubb.) De Winter

Etymology

Sartidia: generic name given by the anagram of Aristida, a genus of the same family.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number is x = 11, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 22. diploid
