Santa Maria University (Venezuela)
The Universidad Santa María is a private Venezuelan university, known for being the first of its kind. Its headquarters have many green areas and a great infrastructure. For the year 2004 it had approximately 20,000 students.
History
The year was 1953 and higher education in Venezuela was limited to academic institutions belonging to the State. This situation coupled with a repressive government that restricted the options for the country's youth to freely train as professionals. At that time, an inspiration arose that would become a reality of freedom and democracy: the initiative of Lola Fuenmayor, a woman concerned about the prevailing educational vacuum, gave rise to the first private university in the country: the Santa María University.
It was on October 13, 1953, in the El Paraíso urbanization, located in front of the historic Plaza Madariaga, where the University of the future was planted, demonstrating the vigor and dedication to service that still identify it today.
The faculties of Law, Pharmacy, Engineering and Dentistry were the pioneers in this educational process; to give way, at the end of the 50s, to the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences made up of the schools of Economics, Administration and Accounting.
Santa María University continued to grow by incorporating, in the 1970s, postgraduate courses in different professions. In this way, the Santa María University demanded space, since the original headquarters were becoming too small for the student population that was formed in it every day. This is how in the year 91 history takes a turn and the university is acquired by Umberto Petricca, an economist graduated from this house of studies, who continues the dream of a new headquarters.
In 1983 the construction of the new campus began, in the sector called La Florencia, located at the end of the Francisco Fajardo Highway, Carretera Vieja Petare-Guarenas; place where since 1985 the central headquarters of the Santa María University have been located. Located a few minutes from the center of Caracas, with fast access roads, its most outstanding feature is its modern facilities nestled in a wooded area, with a beautiful view of Avila where the student enjoys all the services and facilities that will make their stay even more pleasant. I go through the University.
It has 7 buildings with 16 classrooms for more than 100 students and 4 buildings with 30 classrooms of the same capacity. It has a dental clinic building where students do their practices; audiovisual production rooms for the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences; and another where the analog and digital electronics, telecommunications, pavements and materials laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering work. In the facilities of the Faculty of Pharmacy there is an industrial laboratory that produces low-cost generic drugs.
The campus has large spaces with generous green areas for recreation and student enjoyment, it has a soccer field, one for indoor soccer, and one for basketball. It also has four cafeteria areas, one of which stands out for being designed in the style of a food fair in any shopping center, with international fast food chains and various stores where you can get all kinds of products.
History of the Faculty of Dentistry
Foundation
In 1985, construction began on the main headquarters in La Florencia, in the Sucre municipality, Caracas, Venezuela. This would have more than 7 buildings, the Administrative Headquarters and Rectorate, a university fair and recreational areas such as soccer and basketball fields. One of these buildings under construction, specifically module 10, was intended to house the first private School of Dentistry in the country. The original project was conceived by Dr. Julio Alfonso Vaz, who was president of the College of Dentists during the period 1949-1950. For this reason, some consider him the first Dean of said faculty, but it cannot be maintained or developed. as expected due to economic problems, which forces the faculty to close for 2 years.
Much later, the heirs of Doña Lola de Fuenmayor sold the University to the businessman of Italian origin, Umberto Petricca, who completed the construction of the new headquarters and expanded the number of faculties in the University in order to increase the prestige of the University. For 1996, Dr. Petricca names a commission where Dr. Luis Alonso Calatrava appears and the project of the Faculty of Dentistry is restarted. Once the faculty reopened, its Development began. As the first Promotion progressed at the different levels, Dr. Calatrava built clinics for internships, developing and putting into practice the new Academic Curriculum that he and a team of dental professionals manage to put together.
Being the first School of Dentistry in the country to start the clinical management of patients from the 2nd Year of the degree, it motivated social service, clinical research and also promoted biosafety, since it was the first School to have a formal biosafety course for all entrants. Another novelty was the division of the different branches of dentistry by quarters to allow students and future dentists a more specialized approach to each area.
