San José de la Estrella is a station on the Santiago de Chile Metro rail system. It belongs to Line 4 of the network and is between the Trinidad and Los Quillayes stations. The station is located on Vicuña Mackenna Avenue at the intersection with San José de la Estrella Avenue, location 23 of Vicuña Mackenna Avenue, close to the Divino Redentor Parish. The station has an average daily flow of 10,216 passengers.

History

This was one of the so-called ghost stations of the Metro network. Although the beams were left to complete the construction of the station in the future, its definitive entry into operation was not contemplated in the immediate future, so the trains passed by the place where the subsequent stop took place.

Because it is located in a residential sector that is very populated in all directions, the news of the cancellation of the construction of the station provoked the indignation of the residents of the area, who together with the former mayor Pablo Zalaquett filed a complaint with Metro de Santiago, which was not accepted. It was speculated that the funds would be allocated to projects such as Line 3 or 6, which were not signed by the former president of the Republic Ricardo Lagos before 2006.

Definitive construction

Contrary to everything expected, and thanks to pressure from neighbors and the commune authorities, the President of the Republic Michelle Bachelet and the then mayor Pablo Zalaquett led the laying of the first stone of the station on December 28 of 2007.

The estimated demand for the station is 13,152 daily passengers, of which 8,031 correspond to new users of the service.

The station was inaugurated on November 5, 2009, beginning to operate at 3:00 p.m.

Arson attack

During the protests in Chile in 2019, on October 18 of that year, the station suffered an arson attack that affected its mezzanine, its platform, as well as signaling systems and electrical systems. In addition, two AS-2002 trains that were on the platform at that time were burned. The station was reopened on September 14, 2020.
