San Francisco is a municipality in the department of Atlántida in the Republic of Honduras. As of July 2020, it had an estimated population of 16,315 inhabitants.

History

On January 14, 1903, the municipality of San Francisco was founded; According to data found in the National Archive of Honduras. At the beginning, the place was a village called and registered as El Jimerito that belonged to the jurisdiction of the municipality of El Porvenir. This village (first village) was colonized due to being in a banana area, which was later called 'Frisco', with the first inhabitants being people who came mainly from the municipalities of Olanchito and Arenal, in the department of Yoro.

When the municipality of San Francisco was created, its jurisdiction covered everything that is today the municipality of La Másica, part of the municipality of Esparta. The municipality of San Francisco reached its greatest economic boom when the American banana company Vaccaro Bros Society operated.

In 1926, the political government established the limits or separation of La Masica de San Francisco, Atlántida. When the municipality of San Francisco was created.

In 1950 the first building was built and rebuilt in 1982 with Mr. Marshall Hall being the municipal mayor. The majority of the authorities have been originally from Santa Ana and San Francisco. It operated where today is the social center which in the eighties and nineties of the XX century, was the "Saint Francis of Assisi Institute. It is worth mentioning that the 'John F. Kennedy School of Agriculture' currently operates here. previously Normal Mixed.

Its current Municipal Mayor is Enrique Matute. From 2014 to the Present.
