Saladin (صلاح الدين in Arabic) is one of the eighteen governorates that make up the republic of Iraq. Its capital is Ramadi and its largest city, Samarra. Located in the center-north of the country, it borders Nineveh to the northwest, Erbil to the northeast, Kirkuk, Sulemania and Diala to the east, Baghdad to the south and Ambar to the west. With 37,323 km², it is the third largest governorate —behind Ambar and Mutana— and with 3,270,400 inhabitants. in 2011, the second most populous, behind Baghdad.

Name

The governorate owes its name to Saladin (spelled Salah ah Din in the modern romanization of Arabic), a Muslim leader from the 12th century who was born in the mentioned capital of this province.
