Saeima

The Saeima is the unicameral body with legislative power in the Republic of Latvia. It is made up of 100 deputies elected by the open list proportional method, with the seats assigned to the political parties that obtain at least 5% of the votes.

The President of Latvia can dissolve the Saeima and call for early elections. The dissolution procedure involves considerable political risk for the president, including the risk of losing his position. On May 28, 2011, President Valdis Zatlers decided to initiate the dissolution of the Saeima, which was approved in a referendum, and the Saeima was dissolved on July 23, 2011.
