Rwandan flag
The national flag of Rwanda was adopted on October 25, 2001. It is a flag divided into three horizontal stripes with the colors blue (the upper one), yellow (the one located in the center) and green (bottom). The upper stripe is twice as thick as the two lower ones. In the upper quadrant furthest from the mast, the sun is represented, within the blue stripe. Yellow represents economic growth, green prosperity and blue optimism and good luck.
Previous flags
The old flag of Rwanda (used since 1962) was composed, like the flag of Guinea, of three vertical stripes of the same size, red (closest to the mast), yellow (central) and green. Since 1962 the initial of the country's name "R" in black to differentiate it from the guineana. This flag was changed, as part of the national renewal undertaken after the Rwandan genocide. Derived from the Ethiopian flag, the colors green, yellow and red represent peace, hope for the future and the people.
