RTP Madeira is a regional television channel belonging to the Rádio e Televisão de Portugal group, assuming the responsibility of providing a public service to the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

History

RTP Madeira is a regional, alternative television channel that assumes the responsibility and mission of providing a public television service for the autonomous region of Madeira. It began broadcasting on August 6, 1972 in Funchal. Its central objectives, at the internal level, are to reach the entire archipelago with information on regional news. On the external level, it has the objective of bringing the daily events of the region to all Madeirans who are anywhere in the world, with the essential help of RTP International.

On October 9, 2011, RTP Madeira began to broadcast only 5 hours a day while the rest of the time the broadcast was simultaneous with RTP Informação (today RTP3).

On March 7, 2015, RTP Madeira became available throughout the Portuguese territory through the pay television operators MEO, Cabovisão, Vodafone and NOS.

Until February 12, 2017, RTP Madeira was the only RTP channel that still broadcast practically all of its programming in 4:3 format. Since then it broadcasts in 16:9 just like the rest of the channels.
