Roxette
Roxette was a Swedish pop rock duo consisting of singer Marie Fredriksson and singer-songwriter Per Gessle. The duo is considered one of the biggest and most successful Swedish groups since the ABBA times. On comparing the group to ABBA, Per Gessle states: "I think the big difference between Roxette and ABBA is that we are much more rock music oriented than ABBA was...".
They have sold 75 million records and singles, four of their singles reached number 1 on the US Billboard and they were the first non-English speaking band to record an unplugged for MTV. Their career spans more than two decades, during which time they have won various music awards such as the World Music Award, MTV Awards, the BMI in England and several Swedish Grammys.
In a matter of voices: Marie Fredriksson's voice was very personal and full of nuances, in her last stage her range in type of voice would be that of a Soprano. As a solo singer, in some other song, in fragments of her, her interpretations could also be defined as an almost contralto voice; but in general, in the vast majority of her performances (as a soloist, and on Roxette) her type of voice can be described as mezzo-soprano, going through mezzo-soprano Falcon (Soprano Falcon, almost equivalent to light mezzo-soprano) or lyrical mezzo-soprano. A fairly powerful voice, with full bass and agility in the treble; trained to solve virtuosic ornaments; pretty full voice. She has great performances, both as a solo singer and with Roxette. Per Gessle's voice is considered in the tenor range, with rock nuances.
Although the group was founded in 1986, international fame came in 1989 when the song "The Look" elevated them to the top of the main music charts in the United States and then for their participation in Pretty Woman with their song « It Must Have Been Love", in its second version edited especially for this film. They also wrote songs for movies like "Almost Unreal" for Super Mario Bros. and "Stupid" (re-edited) for Spun.
History
Pearls of Passion (1986) and Dance Passion (1987)
Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle had previously formed bands that had significant local success, especially Per, as leader of the group Gyllene Tider. But in 1986, those considered the best singer and the best composer of the moment in Sweden, decided to unite to form Roxette.
In 1986 they recorded their first single, "Neverending Love", which would be included on their first album Pearls of Passion. The single was the duo's first Top Ten hit in their native country, leading to subsequent releases of songs that achieved similar success. Roxette's first album achieved local success that led them to sell more than two hundred thousand copies in Sweden.
After the success of "Neverending Love" in Sweden, Gessle and Fredriksson quickly recorded a full-length album. Translating songs, Gessle had originally written for his third solo album. With the release of the album Pearls of Passion in October 1986, Roxette continued their commercial momentum in Sweden with their single "Goodbye to You". and "Soul Deep." Some songs from Pearls of Passion were released in other countries, however these international versions did not emulate their Swedish success. The album Pearls of Passion was followed by the release of a remix compilation LP of the same songs from their debut album, this remix disc was titled Dance Passion.
Tour: Rock Runt Riket
Later, Roxette together with Eva Dahlgren made a joint tour of live concerts which is titled Rock Runt Riket in 1987. This tour was the first live tour that Roxette made as established grouping. That same year in parallel, Marie Fredriksson released her third solo album entitled Efter Stormen (& # 34; after the storm & # 34;). Meanwhile, Roxette released the song "I Want You", which was recorded in collaboration with Eva Dahlgren and the duo Ratata. It was the single that served to support the Rock Runt Riket tour and at the end of each concert all the artists performed this song.
Look Sharp! (1988)
In 1988 they published Look Sharp!, with which they went on a successful national tour. The album had sold more than three hundred thousand copies in his country (the equivalent of seven platinum records), however that failed to attract worldwide attention. In 1989 things changed dramatically: the album became an international success thanks to a young American who was in Sweden for a student exchange. The young American received the record as a gift, which -after his return home- he lent to an American station. The single "The Look", which had bounced on its releases in Europe, began to be requested by thousands of listeners in Minneapolis. Through copies sent to partner stations, Roxette managed to take its first major step outside of Sweden. In April 1989 the song became Roxette's first 1 in the United States and the first song by a Scandinavian artist to achieve that position since A-ha achieved it with "Take on me" in 1985. "The Look" it went to 1 in thirty other countries and to 7 in the UK, becoming one of the most successful songs of that decade eventually selling 10 million copies.
"Dressed For Success", the second single, charted comfortably in the European Top Ten, (it made the Top 15 on Billboard). A ballad, the first that would inaugurate Roxette in the romantic field, returns the duo to first place on the US Billboard. "Listen To Your Heart" was the duo's second US No. 1 and second UK Top Ten that year (6).
In 1990 "Dangerous", the fourth and last single from Look Sharp! for the international market, reached number 2 in the United States, where it stayed for two weeks. Roxette had become a broadcast and sales success. His marks achieved in the American charts with Look Sharp! surpassed those of any other Scandinavian album. Currently, it is the album with the highest singles chart of any Scandinavian artist in the United States.
In 1990 they reached the third #1 in the United States. To date, "It Must Have Been Love" has been played over 5,000,000 times on US radio, which was featured on the soundtrack to Pretty Woman, a feature film starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. It sold 9 million copies. It peaked at #1 in Japan, Australia, and twenty other countries. It is Roxette's most successful song in the UK (3 in 1990 and 10 in 1993 when she re-entered the official chart) and is one of the most widely played classic ballads today. In 1990, the song spent two weeks at number 1 in the United States, two weeks at number 2, ten more weeks in the Top Ten, and another seventeen weeks in the Top 40. That year, it was named the second most played song of 1990 by Billboard magazine.
Joyride (1991)
In 1991 the duo released the album Joyride, whose main theme, which bears the same name as the album, reached first place on Billboard and twenty other countries. Not only was it the duo's fourth US #1, but it was a demonstration that Roxette would not stop at the success of her first album. That same year, "Fading Like a Flower" ranked #2 on Billboard. "The Big L." it achieved similar success in Europe and "Spending My Time", one of Roxette's best-known songs, kept the album's sales afloat, reaching the Top Ten in Japan and #1 in several Latin American countries. "Joyride" was the third most successful song of 1991 in the world. To date, the album has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and is considered by many fans to be the group's best album.
Tourism (1992)
In 1992 they released Tourism: Songs From Studios, Stages, Hotelrooms & Other Strange Places, recorded during their first world tour "Join The Joyride - World Tour 1991-92", with which they visited four continents, with 107 concerts attended by 1,700,000 people. The album also includes new songs recorded in different parts of the world. "How Do You Do!", their first single, becomes a new hit for the Swedes. They are followed by the theme "Queen of rain" and "Fingertips ´93" (a new version of the theme of the same name included in the album). This new work, despite not being a studio album to use, manages to sell 4.5 million copies worldwide.
Roxette had already become a worldwide hit. In only three years of international success they had sold thirty million records; they had reached No. 1 on Billboard four times and toured the entire world.
In 1993 they collaborated on the soundtrack of the movie Super Mario Bros with "Almost Unreal", a song that had significance despite the film's failure and that led Roxette to get another top ten in the United Kingdom, reaching position number 7. That same year they recorded an Unplugged recital for MTV in Stockholm. This time they were making history again; they became the first non-Anglo-Saxon band to record an unplugged for MTV.
Crash! Boom! Bang! (1994)
In 1994 Roxette returned with their fifth studio album, Crash! Boom! Bang!, a record that meant a strong change in style for the band, now more oriented towards rock and psychedelia. "Sleeping In My Car", the first single, showed a much harder sound, with Marie on lead vocals and a distortion of guitars rather far from the classic Roxette style. The song becomes a hit in Europe, Asia and Latin America. After this topic, they publish the singles "Crash! Boom! Bang", "Fireworks", "Run to You" and "Vulnerable". The album did very well all over the world, except in the USA due to lack of support from the company. Even so, it managed to sell 4 million copies.
In September of that year he started his second international tour Crash! Boom! Bang World Tour 94-95!, with more than eighty presentations in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and South America. This second international tour for Roxette made them the first Western band to play in China since Wham! I did almost ten years before. The tour also took them to South Africa where they were attended by 130,000 fans. In April 1995 they landed again in Latin America, to conclude with the tour a month later in Russia, where they were granted permission to play on May 1, International Labor Day in almost the entire world. This event was another rise for Roxette: the Roxette concert was the first public May Day celebration in Moscow since 1917.
Rarities and Don't Bore Us-Get to the Chorus (1995)
In conjunction with the "Crash! Boom! Bang!" they release their rarities album entitled Rarities, with demos, previously unpublished, remixes and three songs played in 1993 for the MTV unplugged. This album is published in very few countries, becoming a collector's item for fans.
In 1995 the duo released their first greatest hits Don't Bore Us-Get to the Chorus: Roxette's Greatest Hits. The first single, the ballad "You Don't Understand Me" returned them to the Swedish Top Ten. It's the only Roxette song composed with "outside help," as Per Gessle puts it, who met with Desmond Child to write the hypnotic song. The album contained three other new songs in addition to the sixteen best-known Roxette songs from the 1988-1995 era. The second single released was "June Afternoon". As a promotional single, in some countries they publish "I don't want to get hurt".
Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus! was also published in a special limited edition titled: Don't Bore Us-Get To The Chorus! [Roxette's European Promo Tour], which does not contain the track-list of the original edition but only four acoustic versions recorded live at Abbey Road Studios on November 15, 1995 of the songs: "The Look", "Listen To Your Heart", "You Don't Understand Me" and "Help!" (from The Beatles). The album manages to sell more than 5 million copies worldwide.
Ballads in Spanish (1996) and re-release of Pearls of Passion (1997)
The album Baladas en español came out in 1996, and included the most important romantic songs created by Roxette and adapted into Spanish. "A day without you" ("Spending my time") is chosen as the first single. It became a sales record in Spain and Latin America, achieving double platinum status in Spain and reaching gold status in Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico and Chile. The second single was "I don't know if it's love" ("It must have been love"). The album manages to sell more than 2 million copies worldwide.
At the end of 1996, Marie had her second child, and decided to take a vacation to dedicate herself more to her family. Meanwhile Per continued with a solo career releasing her album The World According To Gessle, her first solo album in English.
By 1997 it was almost impossible to find a copy of Roxette's first album, so they decided to reissue it and include eight unpublished songs from the same period of the group, such as the original version of "It Must Have Been Love" or the song that gives the album its name, "Pearls of passion", among other demos and remixes.
Have a Nice Day (1999)
In 1998 they met in studios in Benahavís, Marbella and Stockholm to make the album Have a Nice Day, their first album of new material in five years at the time of its release in 1999. This album shows a marked differentiation from Roxette's previous works by the introduction of electronic influences and atypical sounds in their previous works. This is notorious both in the ballads, such as "Wish I Could Fly", and in the new wave-disco or dance songs, clearly marked in the powerful "Stars". The success of "Wish I Could Fly" returned Roxette to the most important European charts, for example reaching No. 11 in the United Kingdom and its inclusion in the list of the 10 most listened to songs of the year in Europe. The following year, Roxette received the World Music Award in the category "Best Selling Scandinavian Artist of the Year". In Spanish-speaking countries, three bonus tracks in Spanish were included. Other released singles were "Anyone", "Stars" and "Salvation". Have a Nice Day has sold more than 3 million copies. Unlike previous albums, the group decides not to go on a presentation tour.
Room Service (2001)
In 2001 they made their seventh studio album: Room Service, which continues the electronic influence but with a greater presence of traditional rock and acoustic elements. "The Center Of The Heart", the first single, took them back to No. 1 on the Official Swedish Chart, where it stayed for four weeks. That year Roxette went on tour again with the Room Service World Tour 2001, which was seen by some three hundred thousand spectators in Europe. In September, due to the attacks on the World Trade Center, the duo canceled their scheduled concerts and closed the tour early. This album sold over 2 million copies, considerably less than previous Roxette releases. The lead single was followed by "Real Sugar" and "Milk, Toast and Honey". With this album, the group goes on tour, after 7 years without doing concerts, in Europe and Latin America.
The Ballad Hits (2002) and The Pop Hits (2003)
During 2002 the duo prepared two greatest hits compilations. The first, The Ballad Hits, presented that same year with the single "A thing about you", and the second, The Pop Hits, presented at 2003, with "Opportunity Nox". Each compilation included two previously unreleased tracks. In the middle of the promotional tour for The Ballad Hits , Marie fainted and after conducting medical studies to find the cause of her, they discovered a brain tumor. Marie was successfully operated on and moved away from the music to rest with her family. This has caused her to have periods of greater or lesser activity in subsequent years, until her final withdrawal from the stage in 2016.
Meanwhile, Per continued as a soloist with works such as Mazarin, in 2003, and Son Of A Plumber, in 2005. Once back in music, Marie recorded a solo album in 2004: The Change. During her recovery, she began to illustrate, and her drawings were exhibited in art galleries in Europe, as well as making up the cover art for her album.
In December 2005 Per received a BMI award in London for being the composer of two of the most radioed songs in recent years on US radio stations («Listen to Your Heart» and «It Must Have Been Love»). Marie had also attended the award ceremony. At this awards ceremony, Per and Marie made their first public appearance in almost three years.
The Rox Box/Roxette 86-06 (2006)
Their next project was the compilation box The Rox Box (2006), in which they recorded two new songs («One Wish-Reveal») and which includes the best-known hits, plus some rarities and MTV Unplugged. Said disc is released for the band's 20th birthday (1986-2006).
Due to the illness suffered by Marie, Roxette's last performances took place at the end of 2006 to play playback of the single "One Wish" in Sweden and Germany, the country where they were last hired. hour - after Marie decided to accept - to appear at the 50th Anniversary of the famous German magazine Bravo.
As part of Per Gessle's solo Party Crasher (European Tour), Marie Fredriksson accompanied him on one of his performances in Amsterdam. On April 26, 2009, the duo confirmed their participation in a series of forty recitals around Europe under the Night of the Proms framework that started in October and ended in Spain in 2010. The duo had officially ratified their return to the stage after seven years old and with plans to resume Roxette's career.
On August 4, 2010 Roxette played at Leifs Lounge, the club at Hotel Tylösand (owned by Per Gessle), for almost two hours. The concert was announced by surprise on August 3 via Facebook by Per Gessle himself and the six hundred tickets were sold at the hotel reception between 11 and 13:25 on the morning of the concert. According to Per it was a dress rehearsal for the little tour that Roxette had done in August.
Charm School (2011) and Traveling (2012)
On December 3, 2010, Per Gessle announced via Facebook and Twitter that the band's new album, Charm School, would be released on February 11, 2011, the first cut of broadcast, "She's got nothing on (but the radio)", could be heard from January 10 of the same year. From the new album the singles "She`s got nothing on (but the radio)" are extracted, which reaches the top of the charts, "Way out", a single that sounds mainly in European countries, and "No one makes it on her own", a single that was released in some countries such as Chile.
After leaving Charm School, Roxette embarked on a world tour that began in Kazan, Russia, where they packed the Tatnef Arena, a tour that in total consists of more than eighty concerts covering more than twenty-five countries and touring South America (which did not see to the band since 1995), Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. At first the tour seemed like a moderate world tour but due to demand more and more dates were increased (the last were 7 in Australia in 10 days in January 2012), canceling only a few (among those canceled was a date in Mexico City in early March).
The tour band consisted of Christoffer Lundquist on lead guitar (Chistoffer was also a producer on the album), Clarence Öfwerman on keyboards, Helena Josefsson on vocals, Pelle Alsing on drums, and Magnus Börjeson on bass and guitars. This same lineup is the one that had been playing with Per Gessle since "Mazarin", in 2003 (with the exception of Magnus) and they are the members that make up Son of a plumber (album) , another alternative band formed by Gessle. They also made up to a large extent the band that accompanied Roxette on the 2001 tour (at that time Lundquist was in charge of the bass and Helena and Magnus did not participate).
In addition, the return of Roxette was marked by the constant documentation of it from Per Gessle's personal camera, in short videos published on the page's official Facebook, videos that showed the life of the band members after the stage, the daily coexistence, the transfers from one place to another, the installations, the assembly, etc. These videos were assembled for the album's third promotional video, "Speak to me", whose lyrics also refer to some of the greatest hits of the 1990s ("Fading like a Flower", "Listen to your heart", "Anyone"). and others).
In early 2012, Gessle confirmed via his official Twitter account that recording for Roxette's ninth studio album, titled Travelling, had concluded. The fifteen-track album and lead single "It's Possible" was released in March 2012. As in 1992, the group releases an album similar to 'Tourism'; where they mix new songs, with live songs or new versions.
Good Karma (2016)
Good Karma, the duo's tenth studio album, was released on June 3, 2016. The single "It just happens" was released as the lead single on April 8. Regarding the album, Gessle said: "For the new record, we wanted to combine our classic Roxette sound with a modern and slightly unpredictable production to create a soundscape where you want to both acknowledge our sound and find something new."[citation needed] The album charted in numerous countries and entered the UK Official Charts at number 61 and Australia at number 25 (the highest positions since Have a Nice Day and Crash! Boom! Bang!, respectively).
The duo planned to support the album with the Roxette 30th Anniversary Tour, but had to cancel it when doctors advised Fredriksson to refrain from traveling due to his health. Marie sent a thank you letter to fans stating "I'm just not strong enough for life on tour, but I look forward to the release of the new album."[citation needed]
Look Sharp! 30th Anniversary Edition (2018)
Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the publication of the album "Look Sharp", in 2018 a special edition of the album was published with some demos, in physical, digital and streaming.
Death of Marie Fredriksson (2019)
Marie Fredriksson has passed away at the age of 61 after battling cancer for the past few years. Her death was confirmed by her press manager, Marie Dimberg: "It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our greatest and most beloved artists has passed away. Marie Fredriksson died on the morning of December 9 from her old illness ».
At the end of February 2020, Per Gessle released the track "Around the corner (The comfort song)" in tribute to Marie Fredriksson. The theme has the participation of Helena Josefsson.
Bag of Trix (2020)
On October 2, 2020, the single "Let Your Heart Dance With Me" was released, which is part of Bag of Trix. The song was one of the last recorded for the album Good Karma but at that time it was left out of said album. In early 2020, Per worked to finalize the theme. The video was introduced with an interview broadcast live on the duo's official YouTube channel and includes private and documentary footage recorded between 1986 and 1995.
The album consists of 3 CDs with unpublished material and some pearls from his career. Among them "Peace of Cake", recorded for Good Karma; "Tu No Me Comprendes", a Spanish version of the 1995 song "You Don't Understand Me" that was left off the album Baladas En Español; and the cover "Help!" by The Beatles, recorded live at Abbey Road Studios in 1995.
On December 22, 2020, Per Gessle announced via social media the death of the group's drummer, Pelle Alsing, at the age of 60.
Joyride 30th Anniversary Edition (2021), digital reissue of Look Sharp! 30th Anniversary Edition and ROX RMX (2022)
In 2021, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of "Joyride", a special edition is released, in physical (CD and LP), digital and streaming formats, including the remastered original album plus demos and tracks discarded from the album. Later, in 2022, new demos are added to the album "Look Sharp! 30th Anniversary", not included in the 2018 reissue, although this time only in digital and streaming format. Likewise, in 2022, Per decides to release a triple album, in digital and streaming format, entitled "ROX RMX", which includes the most relevant remixes, for him and his fans, of the group's hits.
PG Roxette, Nothing Else Matters (2021), Pop-Up Dynamo! and Wish You the Best for Xmas (2022-2023)
To the surprise of his fans and after much thought, Per Gessle announces in 2022 that he would continue with the Roxette project, but this time under the pseudonym PG Roxette. According to his words, & # 34; it is impossible to replace Marie and that has never been my intention either. It was a fantastic time and dream that we were able to share together. But it feels exciting to be able to continue this journey, albeit in a different way. If Marie had been alive, of course we would have done this together. I feel that this is the right decision. I'm proud of everything Roxette has done and I love working with the Roxette band". Already working under the name PG Roxette, Per releases a cover of the song Nothing Else Matters. This song appears on the album The Metallica Blacklist, a tribute album to Metallica.
In early 2022, Per released the first single titled "The Loneliest Girl in the World", an up-tempo track reminiscent of the classics "Opportunity Nox" or "she She Doesn't Live Here Anymore". As an accompanying song, the single features the song "Sunflower", which according to Per, would not be included on the album Pop-Up Dynamo!. The simple one is received by his fans with pleasure, since it recovers the sound of Roxette but with a current touch. Said single is included in the album, which was released in October 2022.
On September 23, 2022, Per Gessle released the second single called "Walking on Air". And as the accompanying track to its vinyl 7', the single features "Necessary," another song that also doesn't appear on Pop-Up Dynamo!. Said vinyl also includes a remix of the single itself.
On November 1, 2022, the third single from the album, "My Chosen One" is released in digital format with the singer León. This single also includes a remix of the song "Jezebel - Bridge & Mountain Remix.
Similarly, around this time, Per announces on his Twitter account that he would be releasing a Christmas single under PG Roxette, called "Wish You the Best for Xmas". Said single, which came out on digital platforms on November 18 and then on November 25 on 7' vinyl, was accompanied by the song "Wishing On The Same Christmas Star."
On January 13, 2023, Per releases "Headphones" as the fourth promotional single taken from the album Pop-Up Dynamo!. It includes the album version and a shorter radio version. Along with the release, a lyric video is posted on YouTube.
Tourism 30th Anniversary Edition (2023-Today)
In February 2023, the 30th Anniversary Edition of Tourism was released digitally only and on streaming music services, with the occasional demo and outtake included in the edition. The rest of the songs or demos were already included in other previous albums or were published by Roxette in the past.

Various Artists Compilation Albums (Roxette Collaborations)
On some occasions Roxette has recorded "single songs" for compiled albums by various artists, they are songs that are originally difficult to place within an official album of the group since in the first instance they were never published on official records; are collaboration songs for albums released in a special edition. Among some of the loose songs we find the following:
- «I Want You» (Original version) theme included in the simple vinyl album of the same name and years later on in the album compiled by several artists entitled The Record Station 5 (1987); track #3. Published as a vinyl disc, I Want You includes two different versions of this same song:

- «Nothing Else Matters» (the original Metallica theme): included in the album-tribute The Metallica Blacklist (11 September 2021). It's track #36 on the album track-list.
