Dr. Ross Eustace Geller is a fictional character in the American TV series Friends (1994-2004), played by David Schwimmer. He functions as the antihero of the series, and stands out for being rational, intellectual and at the same time somewhat clumsy but tender and kind.

Background

Script

Ross's first line on the show was a depressing 'Hello,' which became a catchphrase for him in subsequent seasons. He is introduced being in divorce proceedings with Carol, his wife, after discovering that she is a lesbian. His last line in the series was directed toward Monica, after she mentioned an uncomfortable detail about his past: "Do you realize that almost ten years went by without anyone knowing?";

General information

Ross is a paleontologist and has a PhD, often referring to himself as "Dr. Geller" or "Dr. R. Geller". Ross is noted for being intelligent, witty, and somewhat artistic, showing an interest in the Metropolitan Museum of Art when he shows Joey Tribbiani Monet's work, when Joey tries to impress a date in the season nine episode "The One With The Fertility Test". Ross has had a crush on Rachel Green since high school, although he joined the "I Hate Rachel Green&#34 club; with his friend Will Colbert (played by Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston's husband at the time), who hated Rachel since she used to bother him, mentioned in 'The One with the Rumor'. He fucked 20 girls in the cast

Family

Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Ross is the older brother of Monica Geller, and is often shown as his parents' favorite. The two brothers are extremely competitive, this is demonstrated in "The One with the Football", where it was revealed that every Thanksgiving during their childhood they played an American football game called " The Geller' cup. This family tradition ended in their sixth year, after Monica broke Ross's nose. In their childhood, Monica and Ross were very violent towards each other. For example, in 'The One with the Inappropriate Sister', they tell Rachel that they used to fight when they were young. Ross and Monica are half-Jewish, but they identify at least in Jewish cultures, with Ross taking a more active role in wanting to teach his son about the faith, as he is revealed in 'The One with the Holiday Armadillo'.. & # 3. 4;

Friends

Ross often has conflicts with her close friend Phoebe Buffay. His rationality and Phoebe's beliefs lead him into conflicts over the theories of Evolution, Gravity, and whether Phoebe's mother was reincarnated as a cat. It was revealed in "The One with the Mugging" that Phoebe once assaulted Ross during his homeless years (stealing a copy of the comic strip Science Boy, which Ross had created). After Ross discovers that his first wife, Carol, is a lesbian, he and Phoebe almost have sex at the bar that would become Central Perk, but are interrupted by his friends.

Ross sometimes describes Chandler Bing as his best friend. He is shown to have old memories in a band with Chandler called 'Way, No Way', and also blamed him when he was almost caught smoking marijuana. Ross is also close to Joey Tribbiani and also helps Joey with movie and theater auditions. He kissed Joey once when Joey needed to practice a role as a gay man. They also tried to kick Chandler out of his friendship group after he ignores them in "The One with the Ring." Towards the end of the series, however, Ross and Joey become closer friends, and are seen dating after Chandler gets married. At one point, Ross tells Rachel Green that Joey is his best friend, to which Rachel replies, "Really?" I thought Chandler was your best friend?" Ross began by explaining, 'Well, Chandler is my oldest friend,' but then refuses to discuss it further.

Marcel

After his divorce from Carol, Ross adopts a capuchin monkey named Marcel. Their relationship was similar to that of a couple living together. Marcel's sexual desire eventually forces Ross to donate him to the San Diego Zoo. Ross later discovers that Marcel has become a famous mascot for a new beer called 'Monkey Shine', and appears in Outbreak 2: The Virus Takes Manhattan. Marcel's favorite song is 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. Later in the series, Ross admits how unusual the purchase was for him, saying in "The One With Unagi," "Remember when I had a monkey...what was I thinking?" & # 3. 4;

Karate

Ross is said to be a former karate practitioner. It is a joke when he pronounces 'ka raa tay', to which the others make fun of him. In "The One With Unagi", he claims that Unagi is a state of total consciousness, even though his friends repeatedly tell him (correctly) that unagie is a Japanese freshwater eel. He makes fun of the self-defense class Rachel and Phoebe are going to and Ross surprises them. In 'The One That Could Have Been', Ross is still practicing karate. Also in an episode before Monica and Chandler get married, Ross promises to "hit Chandler" if he did something to Monica which caused Chandler and the girls to laugh hysterically. In the following episode, he tries to hit Chandler by yelling "Hee-Yah!" to which he is once again mocked. Ross shows himself to be a fighter after fighting with a mugger (off-screen) while he was robbing Ross, Chandler, and two thugs of their personal belongings. He also tried to hit Joey after (apparently) proposing to Rachel and not telling her, however, Ross hits a light pole in Central Perk.

Apartment

In seasons one through four, Ross lives in the same apartment. In season five, he moves out of his old apartment before marrying his second wife. When the relationship ends shortly after marriage, he spends a short period living with Chandler and Joey before finding an apartment across from Monica's that belonged to the 'Ugly Naked Man'. Ross managed to get this apartment by meeting the naked man who was seen by all the other friends. The show never clarified whether it is a one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment, although Rachel temporarily moves out in seasons 8-9 to let Ross be with her baby. In the final episode, Ross claimed to be the only friend who never lived with Monica in the apartment on the show, however, Monica responds by telling the story of Ross living there with his Grandmother when he was trying to be a ballet dancer, making Ross say, "Do you realize that almost ten years went by without anyone knowing?"

Personality

Although generally sweet-natured, he is often socially awkward. Ross is sometimes shown to have a good sense of humor. He is the only member of the group of friends with a PhD, and can be arrogant. In most cases his arrogance either makes him fail or gets the best of him. In later seasons, Ross is shown to be very irritable, often exploding with rage over unimportant things. For example, in 'The One With Ross's Sandwich', Ross is forced to take a sabbatical after yelling at his boss for eating his sandwich. He also highlights his unprofessional attitude when he decided to date his student.

Ross dates a considerable number of women throughout the series. Most dates were interrupted or completely ruined by his paranoia or being a jerk. His unsuccessful marriage to Carol is also a source of Ross's fierce insecurity. Monica says that before Carol left Ross he was never jealous, even though it was obvious to everyone but him that all of his previous girlfriends cheated on him. His insecurity often causes conflict in their relationships, and causes Rachel to distance himself from him, after he became convinced that Rachel's coworker, Mark, was flirting with her, even though Rachel made it clear. that they were just friends. Their relationship ended when Ross slept with a woman named Chloe. His apprehension was also demonstrated during his relationship with Emily Waltham, when he feared that she was becoming too close to Carol's partner, Susan; likewise when he dated student Elizabeth Stevens, and ultimately accompanies her on her spring break to ensure that nothing bad happens to her.

Despite his financial stability, Ross is notoriously stingy. He cuts his hair at 'Super Cuts', steals toiletries and other amenities from hotels and celebrates with Israeli champagne. Ross is often teased by his friends for his annoying habits of correcting people's grammar and avoiding direct dialogue when he is nervous. In the episode The One where Chandler doesn't like dogs, Ross admits that he doesn't like ice cream because of the feeling it produces on his teeth.

Relationships

Ross' three divorces were a running joke throughout the show. He says he loves "being very committed to someone like that," and he is shown to have boundless enthusiasm for proposing marriage.

Carol

Ross divorced his first wife, Carol, eight years into their marriage, when she revealed that she was a lesbian and was having an affair with Susan Bunch, whom he met at the gym. They usually get along well, and share custody of his son, Ben, who was born in 'The One with the Birth'. - one of the final episodes of the first season. Ross and Carol claim to have been married in 1989, when Ross was 21, and she was the one he lost his virginity to. He told his second wife, Emily, that he was dating Carol four years before they married.

In an alternate story, during the show ("The One That Could Have Been, Part 1"), Ross is still married to Carol, but their sex life has stagnated. Not realizing that she is a lesbian, Ross suggests Carol have a threesome, which ends up involving Susan. Ross said he ended up going to a couple. Later, Ross is forced to accept that her wife is a lesbian and ends up comforting Rachel after she discovers that her husband, Barry, is having an affair with a neighborhood dog walker.

Julie

While in China, Ross reunites with Julie (Lauren Tom), an old colleague from graduate school. He first appears in the final scene of the Season 1 finale. They begin dating in Season 2, but break up after Ross discovers Rachel's feelings for him and he decides he wants to be with her instead of her.

Emily

During season 4, Ross marries his British girlfriend Emily Waltham (played by Helen Baxendale), in London. At the ceremony, Ross says Rachel's name instead of Emily during the vows. This leads to a breakdown in the relationship. Ross tries to reconcile with Emily, but she insists that Ross cut off all contact with Rachel; When Ross can't fulfill it, they divorce. She later becomes engaged to someone but calls Ross to tell him that she is having second thoughts about getting married. Rachel accidentally deletes her message and convinces Ross not to call her.

Rachel

Ross has had a crush on Rachel Green during his high school days, when he was in college and Rachel was Monica's best friend. Throughout most of season 1, Ross tries to admit his feelings to Rachel but is never successful. At the end of the season, Chandler convinces Ross to stop pursuing her. Ross goes on a business trip, and while he's gone Rachel finally discovers Ross's feelings. She meets Ross at the airport, but Ross arrives with a new girlfriend, Julie. Ross finds out how Rachel feels in 'The One Where Ross Finds Out', and they kiss. The two get together in 'The One with the Prom Video', and their relationship lasts a year until Ross's jealousy of Rachel's co-worker, Mark, drives them away. Believing they 'were on a break', Ross gets drunk and sleeps with a woman named Chloe (Angela Featherstone). When Rachel finds out, she breaks up with Ross. The scene was so emotionally intense that David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston nearly cried at the end of the episode and continued after it was taped.

The two share an 'up and down' relationship; for the rest of the series and get married after getting drunk one night in Las Vegas. When they can't get an annulment, Ross gets divorced for the third time. Later in the series, they sleep together and conceive Ross's second daughter, Emma. Ross and Rachel later raise Emma together until a fight causes Rachel to move in with Joey.

In the final episodes of the season, Rachel loses her job at Ralph Lauren but is offered a job at Louis Vuitton in Paris. Rachel tells Ross that he is the most important person in her life, and they sleep together. Ross, waiting to return to Rachel the next morning in "The Last One", discovers that Rachel saw the night as "the best way to say goodbye." When Ross rushes to the airport to tell Rachel that he wants her to stay with him, Rachel is emotionally overwhelmed, but she gets on the plane anyway. Returning to her apartment, Ross listens to a message on the phone left by Rachel while she was waiting for the plane to take off. As she records the message, she realizes how much she loves him and wants to stay in New York. The final part of the message contains his desperate attempt to get off the plane which is resisted by a flight attendant. Ross, unaware that she was able to get off the plane, is happily surprised by her presence at the door. The couple kisses, promising each other that "this is it. No more games." They hold hands in the final scene of the series. In the season premiere of the spin-off Joey, Joey mentions that all of his friends have gotten married, settled down, and started having families, implying that Ross and Rachel have remarried..

Charlie

At the end of the ninth season, when Ross invites the whole gang to Barbados for some conferences he has to give, Joey breaks up with his girlfriend Charlie (Aisha Tyler) and then starts one with Rachel. Ross met her a few months ago when she showed him around New York City for her job. Charlie confesses to Ross that one of the reasons she broke up with Joey was because she was having feelings for Ross. Then at the beginning of the last season they were about to sleep together when Ross feels that she needs Joey's permission before anything happens. Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe, who were listening through the walls, realized that Joey was with Rachel and tell Joey that she should ask Ross for permission first. On the plane back Ross asks Joey for permission and he says yes only for him to say yes with Rachel, but when he was going to tell him that Ross interrupted him saying that he became best friends with him and he forgot him. Later, back in New York, Ross catches them kissing but says he's fine with it and invites them on a double date with Charlie. On this double date Ross gets drunk and says a lot of stupid things. Later in the season, an ex-boyfriend of Charlie's offers Ross a grant on the condition that he breaks up with Charlie. At first she says no, but when Charlie doesn't believe Ross that that happened and they go together to confront her ex-boyfriend, he tells her that he still loves her and Charlie breaks up with Ross and returns to her ex-boyfriend.

Career

Ross majored in paleontology, completing his PhD and later working at the Museum of Natural History in New York. In one episode, Ross claims that he has 'abandoned his basketball career' to become a paleontologist. At another point, he says that he has chosen paleontology because it is challenging. He thinks he would have been good at advertising in 'The One with the Mugging', Ross claims that he invented the phrase 'Got Milk?'. He also claims to have the original idea for Jurassic Park. In high school, he scored 1250 on SATs, and is said to have been obsessed with dinosaurs ever since.

Ross later worked as a professor at New York University and caused a stir among his colleagues by dating one of his students, Elizabeth. Finally, he is given tenure, despite the fact that his essays (including a sediment flux publication) are supposedly discredited, forgetting a class, boring his students to sleep, and occasionally giving notes without even looking at his work. the students.

Age and date of birth

Two episodes say that Ross's birthday is October 18. "The One Where Emma Cries," Ross gives that date as his birthday; It was also the date in "The One With Five Steakes and an Eggplant". In "The One with George Stephanopoulos," when Joey and Chandler buy tickets to the New York Rangers to celebrate Ross's birthday on October 20, Ross said that his birthday was "ago." six months & # 34;. In a birthday discussion in "The One with Joey's New Girlfriend,", Ross tells Gunther, "Mine is in December..." before being cut down by Gunther.

Ross's age is not always treated consistently. In "The Pilot,", which aired in September 1994, Ross implies a birth year of 1967 or 1968 when he says, "I'm 26 years old and divorced." Ross and Chandler graduated from college in 1991. Ross mentions that he skipped fourth grade in season 6. In 'The One with the Videotape', in season 8, Ross mentions an event (fictional) in 1983, and notes, "Was he thirteen years old?", indicating a birth in 1969 or 1970. He describes himself as 29 years old in seasons 3, 4, and 5. When a man Drunkenly referring to Monica as Ross's mother at the London wedding rehearsal, she expresses her displeasure at having "a 30-year-old son." In 'The One Where they all Turn Thirty', in season 7, the group mentions that they are all sad together at 30 years old and that in 10 years they will be 40.

Age confusion is a general pattern in all the characters, because although they are all supposed to be 33 or 34 years old at the end of the series, they were not 23 or 24 at the beginning of the 10-year series. This is probably due to the producers wanting it to be a 'show about people in their late 20s', but not realizing that the show was going to become very popular internationally, so which lasted for many seasons.

Children

Ross has two children. The oldest, Ben, who was Ross and Carol's son. He was conceived before the show began, while the couple was still married, and was born in 'The One with the Birth'. Ben lives with Carol and her lesbian partner Susan and was named after the name was on a janitor's uniform in that episode. Ben is shy at first, but Rachel transforms him into a mischievous joker. He was played by Cole Sprouse. He is not seen in all seasons, although he is mentioned.

Ross's youngest daughter (born in the series) is Emma. She was conceived during a one night stand between Ross and Rachel. Emma lives with Ross and Rachel until Rachel moves in with Joey. She remains there for the rest of the series until Ross and Rachel get back together in the series finale. Emma had her name because it was the name Monica wanted for her daughter but she gave it to Rachel (saying that Rachel was more important, and that nothing rhymed with 'Bing').
