Plot
Rodney Tin is a young inventor who idolizes Big Welder, whose company develops useful machines. Rodney invents a little robot called Wonderbot to help his father Herb wash dishes at a restaurant. When Herb's supervisor confronts them, the Wonderbot smashes the dishes, leaving Herb heavily in debt. Regardless, Rodney brings his invention to Robot City wanting to work at Big Welder Industries and help pay off his father's debt. Upon arriving, he learns that Phineas T. Ratchet has taken over the industries and has decided to implement expensive upgrades.
Rodney is ejected and filled with metal dust and meets some curious robots on the streets known as "The Rusties," who meets Crank, a robot he met at the station and saw him taking from him a foot while unconscious. Rodney stays with them at a boarding house owned by Aunt Turbina and begins fixing up old robots in the neighborhood. Upon discovering this, Ratchet's mother, known as Madame Gear, orders her son to stop Rodney and destroy Big Welder.
Rodney later receives word that his father's parts need to be upgraded. Wonderbot reminds him that there is going to be a big party at the Big Welder Industries. Rodney and his friend Crank enter the party in disguise only to hear Ratchet announce that the Big Welder will not be present at the meeting. Rodney confronts Ratchet but is caught by security. Cappy, a company executive who opposes Ratchet's upgrade plans, rescues Rodney and Crank.
Crank is later captured by a street sweeper and taken to a scrap metal foundry. Meanwhile, Rodney and Cappy arrive at the Big Welder's house. Rodney asks the Big Welder to come back to the company but the big robot refuses, telling Rodney to give up and go. Rodney calls his parents with the intention of returning to his town, but Herb convinces Rodney to stay. Rodney rallies the Rusties and prepares them for combat. Crank, after escaping from the foundry, reveals that Ratchet has built a fleet of super sweepers to destroy all the outdated robots. Big Welder reconsiders and returns to the company after regaining his determination.
The Rusties return to the company. There, Big Welder fires Ratchet, but is tricked and knocked unconscious. Rodney, Cappy and the Rusties rescue Big Welder and are chased across town. They eventually make it to the foundry, where Big Welder accidentally enters the processing area. Piper and Aunt Turbine arrive with an army of outdated robots to support their friends. A battle ensues between the outdated and the minions of the evil Madame Gear. Wonderbot fights Gear, who falls into her own furnace while her son Ratchet loses his upgrades after getting caught in some chains. Rodney disables the super sweepers and rescues Big Welder. Retaking control of the industry from him, Big Welder visits Rodney's town to tell the boy's parents that his son will become his successor.
