Biography

Youth and beginnings in the cinema

Altman was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Bernard Clement Altman and Helen Mathews. Of German, English, and Irish descent, his paternal grandfather, Frank Altman, Sr., changed the family name from "Altmann" to "Altmann." to "Altman". Altman had a strict Catholic upbringing. He attended St. Peter's School, then Rockhurst High School and Southwest High School in Kansas City, and was sent to Wentworth Military Academy outside Lexington, Missouri, where he spent his first years of college. In 1943, at the age of 18, Altman entered the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) where he co-piloted a B-24 bomber during World War II. It was during this time that Altman saw the first lights of Hollywood and fell in love with it. Upon his retirement in 1947, Altman moved to Los Angeles, California, and pursued a career as an actor, writer, and director.

After several failures as a film director and dedicating himself to directing television series, in series such as Bonanza or Alfred Hitchcock Presents, he found success thanks to the film M*A*S*H (1970), a satire on the Korean War that won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. From there he developed an upward career that, albeit with ups and downs, made him one of the most original American directors of the second half of the century XX. His use of the continuous movement of cameras and choral cinema are benchmarks and have created a school.

Altman passed away on the night of November 20, 2006 at the age of 81 in a Los Angeles hospital. The cause of his death was due to complications from a cancer he suffered from.
