The Cycling Road World Championships is the most important international road cycling competition; It has been held annually since 1927, in different categories, under the organization of the International Cycling Union (UCI). Unlike the great cycling tours, each category is held in a single race; the winner of each race is awarded the rainbow jersey and is therefore the world champion for one year.
The different races are for three categories of runners; elite masculine, sub-23 masculine and feminine, disputing three specialties; online or road race, individual time trial and team time trial (except under-23).
As of 2011, within this event, the World Youth Road Cycling Championship is held, for cyclists under 19 years of age (previously it was held separately).
The cyclists with the most wins in the online race are Alfredo Binda, Eddy Merckx, Rik Van Steenbergen, Óscar Freire and Peter Sagan with three titles each; while in time trials, Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin add four titles each.
History
The first road world championship was held in 1921 in Copenhagen, but it was reserved for amateur cyclists, where the Swede Gunnar Sköld won.
Starting in 1927, professional cyclists could participate, running together with amateurs in the same race. That first edition was held at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany and saw the victory of the Italian team at the hands of Alfredo Binda for the professionals, while the 5th position of the Belgian Jean Aerts gave him the title of amateur world champion. Later the world championship was divided into two categories: professional and amateur.
In 1958 the online Women's World Championship was established, only for the amateur category, since there was no professional female activity.
In the amateur category, the men's team time trial was introduced in 1962. It was disputed with four runners over a distance of 100 km. In 1987 the women's version also began to be run over a distance of 50 km.
In 1994 there were several changes in the format of the World Cups. For the men's online race, the division between professionals and amateurs ceased to exist, once again running a single race all together and under the name elite (no age limit). As for the time trial specialty, it began to be played individually, with the team time trial disappearing. The same thing happened in the women's branch, it was opened to professional cyclists and the time trial specialty was created, suppressing that of teams. In 1996, the sub-23 category was created for cyclists from 19 to 23 years old, with online races and individual time trials being held.
From 2012 the team time trial returned, but it was contested by professional teams.
Rainbow leotard
The winners of each championship event have the right and honor to wear the rainbow jersey for one year until the next championship. This maillot is a white jersey with five horizontal bands representing the five continents.
Riders who have been world champion at least once during their career have the right to wear rainbow colors on the cuffs and collar of their jersey as a reminder of their triumph.
