R'lyeh

R'lyeh (pronounced Ru-li-eh or Rill-ieh) is a fictional city created by H. P. Lovecraft, first appearing in his story The Call of Cthulhu . Characterized by having an architecture based on a non-Euclidean geometry, it is sunk in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, where the great Cthulhu resides.

Lovecraft established it at latitude 47° 9' S, longitude 126° 43' W, but it has never been investigated. August Derleth used the coordinates of latitude 49° 51' S, longitude 128° 34' W. These coordinates place the city 9500 km from Pohnpei (Ponape), 10 days sailing by fast boat, an actual island in the area, which consequently plays an important part of the Cthulhu mythos as the origin of the writing of Ponape, a text describing Cthulhu.

In the set of fantastic stories known as the Cthulhu mythos, developed mainly in American pulp literature from the 1920s to the 1940s, and whose main precursor was Lovecraft himself, the liturgical phrase most used by Cthulhu adepts was «Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn», which means «In his abode of R'lyeh, the dead Cthulhu waits dreaming ».

...they reached a coast of mud, mud and cyclopea masonry that could not be anything else than the tangible substance of the supreme terror of the earth: the cadaverical and nightmare city of R'lyeh, built to countless eons for repugnant figures that came from the stars without light. There they lay the Great Cthulhu and its hordes, hidden under vaults covered with green mud; sending again, after incalculable cycles of time, those thoughts that spread fear for the dreams of the most sensitive, while appreciating their faithful to launch after a pilgrimage for their liberation and the restoration of their empire on earth...
