Basic data

  • Name: City of The Yunque (National Caribbean Bank)

Río Grande was founded in 1840 and is known as the “City of the Yunque”. This specific town is the only one in Puerto Rico that has a fully navigable river called 'Espíritu Santo'. One of the interesting facts about this town is that the water never goes away there since they have their own pump that transmits water directly from their rivers to their residents. The municipality's economy has several factories, hotels and more than 7 golf courses. Flowers (especially lilies), bananas, yautias, tomatoes and pickles, among other fruits, are also grown commercially. The flag of Rio Grande consists of two horizontal stripes of equal size, joined by a white triangle placed on the side of the flagpole. The upper strip is green and refers to the mountains in that area. The blue stripe represents the Espíritu Santo River and the white alludes to the clouds and the whitish layer (mist) that dresses the slope of El Yunque. Above the white triangle, a Puerto Rican parrot is represented, since it is in this area, specifically, in the Sierra de Luquillo, where this endangered species mostly lives. As a final piece of information, you need to know that Rio Grande is the only town where parrots reproduce for some geological reason.

Location Río Grande is located in what is known as the Northern Coastal Plain. It is limited by the Atlantic Ocean and Loíza to the north; to the south Las Piedras, Naguabo and Ceiba, to the west Canóvanas and Loíza and to the east Luquillo and Fajardo.

Río Grande is very recognized as it is the entrance to the El Yunque National Forest.

Its beach is called Las Picuas and it has 8 neighborhoods: Zarzal, Jiménez, Guzmán Abajo, Guzmán Arriba, Mameyes, Ciénaga Baja, Ciénaga Alta and Herrera.
