The Rio Grande is a river located in the southeast of Brazil, considered one of the most important river courses in the region. Six large dams take advantage of the hydroelectric potential of the river: Furnas, Peixoto, Estreito, Jaraguá, Volta Grande and Água Vermelha.

Its source is in Serra da Mantiqueira and flows into one of the most important agricultural areas of Brazil, between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais

After traveling 1,455 km, it gives rise, at its confluence with the Paranaíba River on the border between the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul, to the Paraná River.

Its main tributaries are the Pardo River and the Sapucaí River (370 km)
