Reyes Silvestre Tamez Guerra (Monterrey, Nuevo León, April 18, 1952), better known as Reyes Tamez Guerra, is a chemist, professor, academic and politician Mexican. He served as Secretary of Public Education from 2000 to 2006 in the government of Vicente Fox. He was elected deputy for the New Alliance party in the LXI Legislature from 2009 to 2012, also being elected its parliamentary coordinator.

Professional career

He obtained his bachelor's degree in Chemical Bacteriologist Parasitology at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León in 1976. He completed his master's and doctorate at the National Polytechnic Institute. Most of his professional career was spent at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. There he served as head of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology (1986), director of the Faculty of Biological Sciences (1991-1992), general secretary of the University (1992-1996) and rector of the institution from 1996 to 2000 until who resigned to join the cabinet of President Vicente Fox as Secretary of Public Education. During his time as rector of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León he ceded the Tigres (UANL) team to the private company Sinergia Deportiva which was created by CEMEX and FEMSA, of the first Mexican division, the same that delivered descended to the second professional division.

In January 2007, Tamez Guerra joined the cabinet of José Natividad González Parás, governor of Nuevo León as Secretary of Education, replacing his predecessor, Professor Yolanda Blanco.

He has been a lecturer on topics of his specialty (immunology and immunochemistry) in Mexico, the United States, France, Spain, Hungary, Israel, China, Morocco, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Ecuador.

Due to his career in the field of scientific research, he participated as a member of the Evaluation Committees for Scholarships and Research Projects of the Deputy Directorate of Scientific Development of CONACYT, and as Rector of UANL, he joined the Board of Government of this same body, in the biennium 1998-1999.

In the field of higher education organizations, he has held the positions of: Member of Cooperation and Study of the Union of Latin American Universities (UDUAL), counselor of the State Commission for Higher Education Planning (COEPES) from the State of Nuevo León (1995 to date); President of the Northeast Regional Council and member of the National Council of ANUIES (1996-2000); and Alternate Vice President of the Inter-American University Organization, based in Canada (1999.
