The Republic of Karelia (Russian: Респу́блика Каре́лия, Karelian: Karjalan Tazavalda, Finnish: Karjalan Tasavalta and in Vepsian: Karjalan Tazovaldkund) or Karelia is one of the twenty-four republics of Russia. It has an area of 172,400 km² and a population of 629,771. Its capital is Petrozavodsk. It is located in the North West district. It borders Finland to the northwest, Murmansk to the north, the White and Archangel Seas to the east, Vologda to the south, and Leningrad to the southwest. It has about 27,000 rivers and about 60,000 lakes, including the Ladoga and Onega. Until 1947, the westernmost part belonged to Finland, but that year, through the Treaty of Paris, it was annexed to the USSR.

History

The name of the country derives from the Finnish population of the Karelians who mainly inhabited these lands until 1939, and from 1920 to 1939 the region of the Aunis Isthmus, where the city of Vyborg/Viipuri is located, which previously belonged to Finland. After the invasion by the USSR, some 400,000 people (which was almost the entire population) took refuge in neighboring Finland. At present most of the inhabitants are of Russian origin.

In 1947, through the Treaty of Paris, the annexations of the USSR became official internationally, with which the Karel-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic was created. In 1956 this Soviet republic ceased to exist and was annexed to the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic as the Autonomous Republic of Karelia. When the USSR disintegrated in 1991 it became part of the Russian Federation under the name "Republic of Karelia".

Since the late 1990s, there has been a greater debate in Finnish society about whether or not to ask Russia to reincorporate Karelia into Finland, lost after the war with the USSR and the 1947 Treaty of Paris. However, other political currents maintain that Karelia should become independent from the Russian Federation and form a new Nordic country.
