According to the Malaysian Constitution, all Malays are required to be Muslims. Citizens of Chinese or Hindu origin tend not to be Muslim, although they are required to convert to that religion if they want to marry a Muslim.

Citizens in the Chinese community practice a mixture of Buddhism, Taoism, and Chinese folk religion. Since this set of beliefs does not have an official name, its adherents are designated as Buddhists, mainly as a matter of bureaucratic convenience.

In the country there are also people who follow Sikhism and Baha'ism.

According to other sources,[citation needed] in Malaysia the official religion is Sunni Islam, which is also the majority religion of Malays (54%).

The Chinese population is mostly Buddhist (18%) and Taoist (22%), while the population of Tamil origin (from India) is Hindu (7%).

There is also a Christian minority (7%).
