Rojo's participants, grouped into dancers and singers, perform live and are then evaluated by a jury (and occasionally by the public). The program, broadcast in the afternoon from Monday to Friday, chooses two participants (a dancer and a singer) who are eliminated weekly, until reaching a final, with the best of each specialty, who defined their place in a special broadcast. of the nighttime program, known as «The gala» of the corresponding generation.

The program in its first phase became an audience phenomenon. With 6 seasons (11 generations), a maximum audience of 37.7 and a peak of 53 audience rating points, more than 1.5 million records sold, and its own movie released in 2006, titled Rojo, the film that was a box office record on its first day. In addition, the special versions born from the original stand out, such as Rojo VIP and Rojito, and international such as Rojo Paraguay and Rojo Perú, the first format that was sold from Chile to another country.

From its beginning in December 2002 until January 2008, it featured the presentation of Rafael Araneda. Since March 2008, there was a change in format, mainly due to the departure of Rafael Araneda from the program, after which Fama Contrafama was eliminated from the title and the slogan The value of the talent, version that featured the presentation of Martín Cárcamo. However, the failure of this format resulted in the end of the program in its 35th gala, on Saturday, July 12 of the same year. Likewise, the executive director of the space, Eduardo Domínguez, ended his television career on Chilean television that day after 25 years directing successful productions such as Más Música, Sábado Gigante, Come with me and Game Night, among others. Domínguez died on November 15, 2016.

On January 25, 2018, during the preview of the Olmué Huaso Festival, TVN broadcast a spot with the phrase "Rojo Vuelve", announcing the return of the successful program to the national screen with a new season. On February 9, 2018, while the commercial batch prior to the Talca Independence Day was broadcast, the channel announced the start of the digital casting for the new season of Rojo, which will be the first phase of auditions for the program. The second stage of the program, called Red, the color of talent was finally released on May 14, 2018.

Structure

The singing and dancing competitions are the central axis of the program. During the program, these competitions take place between different participants in the same category: singers or dancers.

First the contestants introduce themselves; Subsequently, each jury gives a grade to each contestant according to her presentation, noting the quality of the presentation, among other factors. The public participates through telephone voting, voting for their favorite singer or dancer. The next day, the participants who go to the so-called 'chapel' are determined.

Being in chapel means being at risk of abandoning the program, if you are not saved by a new grade, by the teachers or by your own classmates. The 2 participants with the lowest grades and the least voted by the public via telephone or internet go to the chapel.

In another program, the teachers will save a participant from the chapel. The remaining two must appear on the final day where they must submit to the judgment of their own companions. A vote is carried out in which each participant must stand behind the singer or dancer they want to continue in the program, being able to use any parameter; The one with the least votes will leave the competition.

First stage

First generation (2002/2003)

Rojo aired its first episode on December 2, 2002. The program was born because the channel had a weak audience in the afternoon youth schedule, being surpassed by the youth program Mekano, from Mega, which enjoyed tremendous success.

The first day of the program scored just over 10 tuning points, being surpassed by Mekano, who achieved around 25 points, but the press and critics praised the program and the level of the jury. During the week the program was largely unable to raise its ratings nor during the following week. After 4 weeks, the competition program Mekano decided to take a vacation, Rojo began to gain tunes, until on December 27, what seemed impossible was achieved: Rojo averaged 17 rating points with peak of 28 points, surpassing the competition for the first time; The elimination of one of the program's participants had increased the audience. Then came the following year, and on January 2, 2003, Rojo's ratings skyrocketed, breaking its own record: 26 rating points and a peak of almost 37 rating points, ranking as the third most watched program of the day; From then on he achieved averages of 24 points and peaks over 30. The eliminations became more and more dramatic, since the teammates themselves had to eliminate a contestant each week, placing themselves behind who was his favorite. People were already commenting on the program, the press and entertainment programs were talking about its success and the fall of the competing program.

The shocking journalistic stories related to adoption, bulimia, and family problems of each contestant made the public become increasingly fond of the program. The final week of the popular singing and dancing competition was approaching. After the last eliminations and the repechage, there are finally 5 finalists for each category. After these eliminations, Valentina Vega was left out, the singer who years later returned to Rojo la Revancha, once again being one step away from the final. The choice of places for the 10 finalists generated great controversy, for example the Fifth Place of the singer Daniela Castillo who became depressed because of the place she obtained in the competition, after being one of the favorites: the public demonstrated with two thousand complaints to the official channel TVN. Another controversy was generated by the dancer Pablo Vargas who became angry for not having won first place crying and belittling his opponent Rodrigo Díaz. After the competition, the two of them ended their friendship due to competitiveness. During the last week of the 1st Generation, a mini competition was also opened, where the public voted for the most popular. The Prize would finally go to María José Quintanilla, who with a historic vote, more than 87,000 votes would leave her in 2nd place. place to Daniela Castillo with more than 70,790 votes.

The final

The final came with unexpected success on Friday, February 7, 2003. The program achieved between 6 and 8:05 p.m. an average of 32 rating points, with a peak of 42, quite an event considering the schedule and the summer date. When the winner of the dancers category Rodrigo Díaz was chosen, the rating rose to 38 points, while his competition Mekano only achieved 3 rating points, Rojo simply crushed his competition. But this would not be all, since when the winner María Jimena Pereyra was chosen in the singers category, a peak audience score of 42 points was achieved. Rojo had already become a success, and the winners of the competition were on the cover of newspapers and magazines the next day. Thus, in 2005, the program format was purchased by "LEMA Producciones" and Canal 13 of Paraguay, where the program has become a ratings success, reaching screen quotas above 50% share, and is now in its 3rd year of broadcast. While in Peru the format is already being produced and its premiere is in 2013.

In 2005, Paraguay bought the program format, titling it locally as Rojo Fama Contra fame Paraguay, broadcast on Channel 13, for 3 years with several seasons, in 2012 Rojo returns but on another Channel now on Telefuturo and another name Rojo el Valor del Talento for a year and 2 Seasons. Rojo VIP y Rojo

The success of the Rojo program in Chile led to the birth of new programs with the same style. In 2005 on Fridays, and in 2007 throughout the week, the singer María José Quintanilla was the host of "Rojito", a show where small children's talents competed in categories of singing and dancing. In the 2005 season, the program lasted approximately 4 months, with Michael Pavez as the winner for dancers and César Morales for singers. However, the 2007 season was not as successful as the first, so it only lasted two weeks. Johanne Carrasco won in the singers and Karla Orellana won in the dancers.

Also in 2005, "Rojo VIP" was made, a stellar show that was broadcast on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 p.m., and animated by Rafael Araneda himself. Old singers who have a great career and achieved success years ago competed in this program. At the same time, these singers are remembered in the collective memory of Chileans. 19 outstanding popular singers competed for a prize of more than 60 million pesos (more than US$110,000): Miguel Piñera, Alejandro de Rosas, Juan Carlos Duque, Peter Rock, Pancho Puelma, Óscar Andrade, Catalina Telias, Cristóbal, Rodolfo Navech, Mónica De Calixto, Eduardo Valenzuela, Patricia Frías, Luis Dimas, Patricio Renán, Álvaro Scaramelli, Florcita Motuda, Irene Llano, Miguelo and Buddy Richard, who was the winner of the competition.

Red, the movie

Rojo, already consolidated as a true brand, not only successfully ventured into television and music, it also did so in cinema, thanks to the enormous commercial success of the program, the records, marketing products such as notebooks, games, picture albums and DVDs, etc., in addition to the great popularity of their faces. In 2006 Rojo, the Movie was released, titled the first musical of the 21st century, and a pioneer of its genre in Chile. The cast is made up of great Chilean actors, in addition to the most outstanding singers and dancers of the program such as María José Quintanilla, Monserrat Bustamante, Daniela Castillo, Mario Guerrero, María Jimena Pereyra, among the singers and dancers such as Yamna Lobos, Rodrigo Díaz, Nelson Pacheco and Christian Ocaranza, all from the first and second generation. This film was a box office success in Chile, on its first day of release it blew up the box office, achieving a new record by being the most viewed Chilean film on its first day in history.

Red Idol

In 2007 Rojo became part of American Idol Latino, selecting the 5 best singers of the program and before a national casting, such was the success that the same juries of the international program traveled to Chile to evaluate the finalists: Rubén Álvarez, Licetty Alfaro, Francisca Silva, Daniela Ceballos, Rodrigo Tapia

Red Clan

Yamna Lobos

The Red Clan is made up of singers and dancers who have competed in Rojo, all winners or participants of a Year Final.

During 2003 the Red Clan was made up of the participants of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation, when the Grand Final of the year arrived, the 8 finalist competitors for each category became part of the clan for the year 2004, these are:

Dancers: Christian Ocaranza, María Isabel Sobarzo, Rodrigo Díaz, Pablo Vargas, Yamna Lobos, José Aravena, Raúl Martínez and Maura Rivera. (During the course of 2004 Raúl Martínez is replaced by Nelson Mauricio Pacheco).

Did you mean:

Cantantes: Carolina Soto, Monserrat Bustamante, María Jiména Pereyra, Luis Pedraza, Mario Guerrero, María José Quintanilla, Leandro Martínez y Daniela Castillo.

Then, each year new participants join the clan who have been in the grand final of the year (the winner will be part of the clan par excellence). In the 2004 Grand Final, Claudio Puebla (dancer) and Sandier Ante (singer) were declared the winners, so both became part of the clan. A new competition was expected for 2005, where participants competed representing their country, so the representatives of Chile were the 3 finalists from 2004 plus 1 finalist from 2003. In addition, they had to "displace" to a singer and a dancer from the program (who would later join the 2nd generation in 2005). According to all this, the clan for the year 2005 was composed of:

Dancers: Claudio Puebla, Christian Ocaranza, María Isabel Sobarzo, Rodrigo Díaz, Pablo Vargas, Yamna Lobos, Maura Rivera and Nelson Pacheco.

Singers: Sandier Ante, Monserrat Bustamante, María Jiména Pereira, Mario Guerrero, María José Quintanilla, Leandro Martínez, Daniela Castillo and Katherine Orellana (2004 finalist invited to the clan for her great popular success)

So the representatives of Chile are made up of: Dancers (José Aravena, Leticia Zamorano, Juan Luis Urbina and José Luis Quijada) and singers (Carolina Soto, Daniel Donoso, Juan David Rodríguez and Bárbara Muñoz). The 'displaced' participants They are Paulina López (finalist dancer in 2004) and Luis Pedraza (finalist singer in 2003).

At the end of the Final 2005 competition, Carolina Soto (singer) and Leticia Zamorano (dancer) were declared winners, so they directly entered the red clan for the year 2006. In addition, a farewell was given to the great singer, emblem of Rojo María Jimena Pereyra for deciding to leave the program, and also some participants were "displaced" of the program to, for the most part, not return, so the red clan for the year 2006 was made up of:

Dancers: Leticia Zamorano, Christian Ocaranza, María Isabel Sobarzo, Rodrigo Díaz, Pablo Vargas, Yamna Lobos, Maura Rivera and Edwin Rivera (participant of the 2nd international generation of 2005 invited to the clan for its great popular success).

Singers: Carolina Soto, Sandier Ante, Monserrat Bustamante, Mario Guerrero, María José Quintanilla, Leandro Martínez, Daniela Castillo, Katherine Orellana and Juan David Rodríguez (historic participant in red invited to the clan for his great popular success).

The 2005 finalists who do not continue are dancers (Myriam Martínez, Paulina López, Alejandro Ramires and Sandra Liendo) and singers (Gabriel Suárez, Orlando Oliva, Camila Mendez and Daniel Donoso). Furthermore, María Jimena Pereyra will not continue, and for the dancers: Claudio Puebla and Nelson Pacheco.

At the end of the Final 2006 competition, Rodrigo Tapia (singer) and Iván Schmidt (dancer) were declared winners, so they directly entered the Red Clan, María José Quintanilla will not continue for reasons of animating Rojito 2 and a children's block on TVN, in addition a Red Symbol competition was held with some old participants from different generations where the winners of dancers (Paulina López) and singers (Simoney Romero) directly enter the clan, so the clan for The year 2007 was made up of:

Dancers: Iván Schmidt, Paulina López, María Isabel Sobarzo, Rodrigo Díaz, Pablo Vargas, Yamna Lobos, Maura Rivera, Fabián Castro, María Jesús Tapia (during 2007 replaced by Bárbara Moscoso), Diego Gómez, Iván Cabrera, Mónica Ferrada (last 5 dancers named are finalists of the 2006 grand finale invited to the Red Clan)

Singers: Rodrigo Tapia, Simoney Romero, Mario Guerrero, Leandro Martínez, Katherine Orellana, Juan David Rodríguez, Monserrat Bustamante and Daniela Castillo (these last two are leaving the program).

At the end of the Final 2007 competition, K-bala (singers) and Nía-Francisco (dancers) were declared winners, but they did not enter the red clan; It is also the moment when the most members retired from the Clan, among them, the oldest members of the Red Clan such as Mario Guerrero, Rodrigo Díaz, María Isabel Sobarzo, among others. Therefore, for the year 2008, there is the Red Staff, made up of dancers from the 2006 and 2007 seasons, who, in addition to accompanying the choreographies of the new participants, present musicals of various themes, they are:

Dancers: Carolina Gómez, Mónica Ferrada, Bárbara Moscoso, Nía Marambio, Ivana Vargas and Enzinge Stuardo, and Dancers: Iván Schmidt, Fabián Castro, Diego Gómez, Francisco Chávez, Iván Cabrera and Felipe Figueroa.

At the end of the Final 2018 competition (first season), Juan Ángel Mallorca (singer) and Hernan Arcil (dancer) were declared winners, so they directly entered the Red Clan, but this time it is only composed of 4 singers and 4 dancers but some finalists do not enter the clan like the singers: Jeimy Espinoza, Carla Costa and Andrei Hadler because they were the most rejected and poorly evaluated by the public and they enter instead of them: Toarii Valantin, Piamaria Silva and Millaray Mandiola. The dancers who enter the clan are all the finalists except Chantal Gayoso who entered to replace Nicole Hernandez. Therefore, the 2018 clan of the first season was made up of:

Dancers: Hernán Arcil, Geraldine Muñoz, Matias Falcón and Chantal Gayoso (enters the clan to replace Nicole Hernández).

Singers: Juan Ángel Mallorca, Millaray Mandiola, Toarii Valantin and Piamaria Silva (these last three singers mentioned join the clan due to their popular success).

Sections

In the program there were and still are various sections related to the program itself, singing and dance:

  • The "Copuchas de María José Quintanilla": The little singer led the first section of the program, where she counted the "infidences" of the contestants of the seeker. This section ended at the end of the third generation.
  • Scanner, section presented by Leticia Zamorano, where it is shown through dance, a story related to a daily theme with the purpose of leaving us a positive message. The section went once a week where the dancer was seen with other great dancers of the program. Section finished after the dancer retires from the program.

Other sections that haven't been featured for a while are:

  • Between chimneys, section presented by Rodrigo Díaz, which shows exotic dances every week, usually from other nations. Section that is sporadicly issued.
  • I can, too., disabled people fulfill their dream of singing or dancing in the program. It was issued from 2003 to the end of its season.
  • Metamorphosis, the dancer Christian Ocaranza presents musical assemblies based on its own orginality and style of dance. Finished when Christian renounces Red and then returns to the last season of the program.
  • I didn't have Red., section in which older people who did not have the opportunity to compete in a Red-style program (the absence of such a program) are interviewed and are mainly dedicated to singing in squares, fairs and other places throughout the country.
  • The participants of the competition not only sing or dance: they will also tell their stories of life, their sorrows, joys, their relationship with their family and personal affairs; the animator Rafael Araneda will be responsible for showing their interesting, and sometimes dramatic stories.
  • There have also been introduction of play and entertainment sections, such as parades, competitions and baccalaureates.
  • In this season the "I am Red" section has been introduced, in which a former participant visits the program where, in addition to presenting, shows his activities after his departure from the program.

Media impact and controversy

The Rojo program and its members have nourished the Chilean media for years; they have spent hundreds of liters of ink publishing covers and interviews in Chilean newspapers and magazines. To date, more than 150 covers have been published in newspapers, supplements and magazines. The popularity of Rojo has also been demonstrated when all Chilean channels, not just the official TVN, comment on the various events linked to the program. But the media have not only published about the success of Rojo, but also about the various controversies that have been generated from it. Here are some of the controversies that generated the cover and comments on all television channels.

  • First cover of the press dedicated to Red, February 2003: "The painful family history after the success of the little María José Quintanilla". The cover refers to the serious state of health suffered at that time by the father of the 12-year-old girl, a situation parallel to the resounding success that the little girl gets day by day in her apparitions in Red and was unknown until then.
  • Some members of the first generation refuse to return to restitution on the grounds of stress and low pay.
  • The member Daniela Castillo is left in fifth place of the competition, the fact generates thousands of claims and cover in the newspapers.
  • Rafael Araneda is a live critic of a second-generation contestant, the fact is criticized by the internet and is the cover of Las Últimas Noticias. Araneda also criticized Nelson Pacheco live when he learned that the dancer intended to stop going to school and give free exams to give time to the program trials.
  • Little Maria José Quintanilla becomes a sales phenomenon. The youngest and most popular member of Red gets sales equivalent to Double Platinum Disc in just 15 days. Cover in The Last News.
  • María José Quintanilla leaves the program for a month due to a great deterioration of her vocal cords and is operated by tonsils and adenoids. The absence of Red's "child-star" gives rise to the written press speculating with the eventual departure of the most popular face of the program to the channel of competition. The newspaper "La Cuarto" publishes on the cover that "María José went to Canal 13", information that was immediately demented by TVN and Maria José's mother during the issue of Red that same day, hours later.
  • Daniela Castillo has a fort found the jury Jaime Coloma who leaves her crying.
  • María Jimena Pereyra hits a wall opening her wrist, due to her anger at losing a test of Great Red.
  • Pablo Vargas alleges that the program is arranged, the fact causes cover and the next day Rafael Araneda faces him live.
  • Carolina Soto and Monserrat Bustly fight publicly, as according to the latter all her companions wanted her to win the Great Red, being Carolina the winner.
  • Some Red Clan members threaten not to return to the program if they are not paid.
  • The parents of the 5-year-old singer Christell are accused of child exploitation, when she posted on the internet a video where she does not want to continue singing for a stomach discomfort, but is forced by them to do so, the fact generated dozens of covers and comments on many TV shows.
  • Maura Rivera and Yamna Lobos come into a fight through the media because of the two of them the most ratingbecause of ego problems, because they were both peak at one of Red's galas.
  • Carolina Soto states that she is harassed by some fans fearing for her safety.
  • The member Rodrigo Cruz, after a conflict with the jury, announces live that he withdraws from the program, but at the time he returns crying to the study, asking for forgiveness.
  • One of the biggest polemics was when Juan David Rodriguez is accused of drug trafficking, the fact caused many covers and TV shows talked about the issue for several weeks. Finally Juan David is released for innocent, but he admits his drug addiction live during the program, the program gives him special help.
  • About 10 members are fired from Red, where is Nelson Mauricio Pacheco and Claudio Puebla, the fact generates cover and comments in the show programs.
  • A TVN former choreographer and dancer accuses Christian Ocaranza from Germany on a cover of the newspaper The Fourth of being homosexual, the fact was somewhat confusing and never quite clear.
  • María José Quintanilla is hospitalized for excessive work and stress, which caused her a decay, she ends up telling her truth in the program.
  • Pablo Vargas is the protagonist of a strong car accident, he is accused of drunk driving, is punished for two months off the program screen Red
  • Katherine Orellana is operated as a matter of urgency due to her fat, subjecting to a by pass gastric
  • Maura Rivera suffers an accident with her wardrobe uncovering one of her breasts, the fact generated cover.
  • Leandro Martínez is fighting for aggression against his father.

  • The 2018 edition, Red, the color of talent He wasn't without controversy either. On Tuesday, May 29, 2018, Jeimy Espinoza criticized that the notes delivered by the jury to Juan Ángel Mallorca were given away, as they did not reflect the boy's real performance. This caused the crying of John Angel, who then drowned with his coach, Maria Jimena Pereyra, saying that he always gives the best of himself and struggles not to be sent to chapel. In addition, Jeimy said there should be a pattern for evaluation, because the jury notes do not reflect those given by the public. Jeimy's criticism received the support of Andrei Hadler, saying that John Angel is not versatile, as he always sings the same kind of songs. The controversy provoked the public's support to Juan Angel, since, as in this edition the audience is the fourth jury, they finished evaluating Andrei with a very bad note, sending him to chapel. Jeimy Espinoza was also badly evaluated by the public, in addition to being sent to chapel by his own companions, among whom was Juan Angel himself.
  • On Thursday, June 7, 2018, Carolina Soto was invited to the new edition of the program, Red, the color of talent. His presence was immediately well received among the public, the participants and the coaches, except María Jimena Pereyra, who was clearly uncomfortable by the presence of Carolina. The driver Alvaro Escobar asked the former colleagues of Carolina (now coaches) to define it in a word. While Daniela, Leandro, Christian, Maria Isabel and Yamna defined her with affectionate words, Maria Jimena misrepresented her with the word "Festivales". Even Maria Jimena did not seem to pay attention to what Carolina said, as she only focused her attention on her cell phone. Even when Carolina asked for permission to sit next to the coaches, she was pointing out an empty seat, which belonged to Maria Jimena. This generated speculations and a clear signal of the breakthrough of friendship between Soto and Pereyra, with the Argentine answering through her Twitter account comments where she questioned her attitude towards Carolina, responding with comments like "Pena gives me what she did with me" and "She has behaved very badly with me, I will never forgive her." The next day, in the pharmacy program Intruders, it was revealed that the break was generated years ago, when Maria Jimena finished with her ex-girlfriend. Carolina was still a friend of Maria Jimena's ex-partner, which would have outraged her, but that everything worsened when the transandina found out that Carolina had spoken ill of her current partner, which would have generated the break in irreconcilable way,

If Jorge voted for Andrei, it would be a tie between the nominees, but Jorge decided by Felipe, resulting Andrei eliminated. On the first day of the week of repechation, the comrades labeled Jorge as a traitor, since, according to them, the plan was to generate a tie between Andrei and Felipe, before which the jury should deliberate on who should stay. However, Jorge defended his position, saying that it was a lie about the tie agreement, since according to him, in case of being one of the nominees, his companions wanted to remove him, besides declaring that he has the right to decide who wants him to leave or stay, and in this case, he had decided to vote for his friend Felipe.

However, before this happened, Maylor claimed that the opinion that the jury Neilas Katinas gave about his presentation the previous day was a disrespect, as the jury had asked him whether he and his brother were on the show for their passion for dancing or just for seeking fame. Katinas defended his position by saying that Maylor's presentation was poor, as he showed neither quality, nor heart, nor anything. Maylor, for his part, said that he did not want to appear in the elimination line and further stated that he did not want to present himself to the restitution, but that he should do so by contract requirements. With this, Marlon declared that he would leave the competition for his own decision and give his quota to his brother Marlon, after which he left the stage.
