rectal tenesmus is a symptom described as the sensation of having to defecate, which sometimes is not achieved when trying to defecate and the sensation does not disappear after doing so. Most of the time the stools are absent or very few and occur in numerous episodes.

It can be associated with both diarrhea and constipation.

Causes

Tenesmus often occurs with inflammatory bowel diseases.

It is a symptom that can appear in gastroenteritis, proctitis, rectocele, ulcerative colitis, rectal cancer and frequently in geohelminthic parasitism Trichocephalosis -by Trichuris trichiura-.
