Rebeca Martínez (December 10, 2003 - February 7, 2004) was a Dominican baby who was born with two heads, due to a congenital malformation called Craniopagus parasiticus.

Biography

She had a parasitic twin, a very rare case where one of two conjoined twins stops growing during pregnancy, causing an anomaly known as craniopagus parasiticus. There have been only eight known cases of this anomaly in recorded history, and Rebecca was the second not to die after birth.

Death

Rebeca Martínez underwent surgery in Santo Domingo on February 6 in an attempt to remove her extra head: the first surgical intervention of its kind in history. The doctor Jorge Lazareff directed the procedure, which lasted 11 hours. On the morning of February 7, Rebeca died of complications related to the operation.
