Raven is a fictional superheroine appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character first appeared in a special insert in DC Comics Presents #26 (October 1980), and was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez. Daughter of a demon father (Trigon) and human mother (Arella), Raven is an empath who can teleport and control her 'soul', who can fight physically, as well as act as Raven's eyes and ears away from her physical body. She is a prominent member of the superhero team The Teen Titans. The character also goes by the alias Rachel Roth as a false civilian name.

Raven has appeared in numerous animated television shows, series and films. Raven appears in the first live-action adaptation of her as one of the lead actors in the Titans television series for DC's new streaming service played by Teagan Croft.

Development

In an interview, Pérez described his design approach for the character, "Following the example that Raven was very mysterious in the style of Phantom Stranger, I took that as a starting point, and used the face shading where half of his face is always shadowed despite the lighting, was a trick I obviously got from Phantom Stranger who also had the same deal. He had a long, flowing cape, just like her, and in her case, since her name was Raven, I decided to create a silhouette for her that The hood was designed so that in profile it ended up looking like the head of a bird, so that When his soul self came out, since that was done in complete black, it looked like a gigantic black crow. Her name and the Phantom Stranger were key to the way I designed her."

When Pérez was asked if the characters' faces were based on any real-life people, Pérez said the following: "Originally, Raven was Persis Khambatta, the actress who acted in the first film of Star Trek, and later she became a young woman named Fran Macgregor, who was a dancer, and I used some of her features, particularly for her figure, for Raven's.

History

First life

A character with a dark past and origins, Raven is the mixed-race daughter of a woman named Angela Roth, known as Arella and the demon Trigon. Raven was conceived as a product of Arella's rape by the demon Trigon. She grew up in an alternative dimension called Azarath, with magical and pacifist inhabitants whose spiritual leader was the mystic Azar, who teaches her to "control her emotions." to repress in this way the demonic inheritance that resided in her. In that process she learned to develop her empathy, her healing powers and to be able to separate her soul from her body and control her Soul-Self. Essentially, if Raven was allowed to feel any emotion, her father would recreate it in her vision to unite and together dominate all possible dimensions. During this time, Raven rarely saw her mother and became estranged from her. Upon Azar's death, Arella began the task of raising and teaching Raven. Around that same time, she met her father face to face for the first time. Shortly after turning 16/18, Raven learned that Trigon was planning to come to her dimension; She swore to stop him.

Raven initially approached the Justice League for help, but they rejected her on the advice of Zatanna, who sensed her kinship and demonic essence. In desperation, she reformed the former Titans as the New Young Ones. Titans to fight his father. The team consisted of Robin, Starfire, Cyborg and Beast Boy. Raven and her new allies would later come to see themselves more as a family than a superhero team.

Trigon soon kidnapped Raven and took her with him to his dimensional home. The team defeated Trigon and sealed him in an interdimensional prison with the help of Arella, who remained at the gate as a guardian. However, Raven continued to fight against her father's influence, as he was not completely destroyed. Over a period of time, Raven lost control of her emotions several times in stressful situations, but she managed to regain control of her emotions before Trigon could assert himself and possess her.

Eventually, Trigon managed to completely corrupt her, and Raven willingly helped him enter reality. Trigon destroyed Azarath and all its inhabitants. He also managed to absorb and corrupt the entire Earth, except for the Titans who were saved by his bond with Raven and Lilith's precise instructions. Trigon, in his desire to destroy them, created for each of them, corrupted versions of themselves that would destroy everything the Titans loved, so that when they killed them they would be corrupted by Trigon. But Lilith managed to take control of the evil duplicates and used them against Raven, attacking her to death, as this would free her from Trigon's power. Once Raven was dead, the goddess Azar was able to use her body as a conduit for her power and the souls of Azarath, stored in Raven's own rings.

As he did so, Raven's soul emerged white, purified of evil, and together with the souls of the inhabitants of Azarath, they enveloped Trigon, who could not bear the purity of said souls and was destroyed.

Raven

After Raven's disappearance, Arella traveled the world in search of her. She tracked her down until she finally found her, but they were both kidnapped by Brother Blood. Brother Blood's subordinates used Raven to control Nightwing (formerly Robin) as part of Blood's plans. The Titans rescued them both and prevented Brother Blood from returning to power.

As a result of Trigon's defeat, Raven was free to experience her emotions for the first time in her life. Raven found that she was able to not only sense, but control the emotions of others. She learned to wield this power only after she unintentionally made Nightwing believe that he loved her when she thought she was in love with him. Raven also fostered a relationship with technopath Eric Forrester, who was using the life force of the women he seduced to regain some of his lost humanity. Forrester knew that Raven's Soul-Self could help him permanently retain her humanity. This attempt was interrupted by the intervention of Joseph Wilson (Jericho), who helped Raven overcome her love for Forrester by destroying him and thus freeing Raven from her influence.

Raven was later kidnapped by The Wildebeest Society during the Titans Hunt storyline. The Wildebeest, led by the souls of Azarath possessed by Trigon, were to use several Titans to achieve the return of Trigon. During a massive battle, Raven was possessed by evil souls and once again became the doppelgänger of her demonic father. Arella, along with Danny Chase, used Azar's soul power to cleanse Raven; Consequently, her body was destroyed, Arella and Danny sacrificed themselves and joined the cleansed souls of Azarath to finally become Phantasm.

Evil Raven

Raven appeared possessed by her negative consciousness and attempted to implant Trigon's seed into new bodies. She interrupted Nightwing and Starfire's wedding and implanted a Trigon seed into Starfire. Instead of corrupting her, she actually implanted Raven's positive soul. This caused Starfire to leave Earth to escape the Evil Raven. The Titans were able to defeat her only because of the help they received from Phantasm.

Raven later returned, still evil, in order to destroy the positive version of herself implanted in Starfire. With the help of the Titans, the Evil Raven was reduced to ashes, and Raven's positive essence was given a new golden spirit body, which was completely free of her father's demonic influence. In New Tamaran, Starfire and Raven's golden spirit form revealed that implanting Raven's soul into Starfire was actually her plan to get rid of her demon soul once and for all.

Golden Spirit

In her disembodied spirit form, Raven returned to Earth to help extract Cyborg's soul and consciousness from the computer mind of the planet Technis. She was later instrumental in defeating Imperiex by helping Wonder Woman and Tempest re-feed Darkseid himself. As a spirit, Raven wandered the land, searching for her place in the world.

Renaissance

As Raven's spirit sought her place in the world, Brother Blood came to claim her. Her spirit was trapped in the body of a teenage girl by the Church of Blood. The Teen Titans (reformed again) discovered that the faithful of the Church of Brother Blood were worshipers of Raven's father, Trigon. They also found a prophecy that told of the marriage between Brother Blood and Raven that would result in Armageddon. The new team interrupted the wedding, and Raven forced the cult to escape. She then joined the new Teen Titans and enrolled in a high school as Rachel Roth, using her mother's original last name.

After her rebirth, Raven began to develop romantic feelings for her teammate, Garfield Logan (Beast Boy), and the two became romantically linked.

Romance with Beast Boy (Before the new 52)

Before 52; Beast Boy and Raven have a talk about his difficulty reading his emotions, and his encounter with Headcase and Solstice. Over time, Raven begins to open up about her true feelings. Even though the darkness within her left scars throughout her life, she was even more afraid of her love for Beast Boy than it would cause. Beast Boy makes it clear that he doesn't want to escape any part of her. Hurt, Raven decides that she needs to embrace the positive feelings within the innermost parts of her, rather than the negative feelings within herself. Beast Boy assures him that this is part of being human, and points out: "I think you've worried enough about the bad... so why don't we focus on the good for a change?"; With that, they share a heartfelt kiss to renew their relationship so she can finally embrace her love for others.

52

In 52, after Superboy's death, the Titans begin to fall apart. Robin joins Batman, and Wonder Girl leaves the team. Beast Boy struggled to maintain the team, and the new members who joined were only interested in seeking fame and honor, rather than seeking justice. When Beast Boy decides to help Steel on a mission, most of the members leave, leaving only Raven and Zatanna. Later, Beast Boy, Raven, Offspring, and Aquagirl assist Steel in launching an attack on LexCorp. Raven also participated in World War III. Eventually, Robin, Wonder Girl, and some new members join the Titans, making a complete team again. Beast Boy and Raven are among the only members to remain on the team during this period.

One year later

Raven left the team after she and Beast Boy broke up. Letting the others think she was leaving because of Garfield, Raven actually left because she discovered a secret from one of the other Titans.

Raven harnesses this power with a book of unclear meaning. Raven has a floppy disk containing Jericho's soul, she performs a cleansing ritual on his soul and transfers it to a new body before returning to the team as a full member.

Without warning, the Titans are captured by the villainous Titans East and transported to the original Titan Island in New York City, where Raven is placed in "care" of Enigma and Duela Dent, who psychologically tortured her. Raven manages to escape. After defeating Titans East, she gives hints that she still loves Garfield, but refuses to dwell on the matter, leaving their relationship uncertain.

After the death of Bart Allen, Raven, along with the other adult Titans, decide to leave the team. Raven then decides to attend high school, never having had the opportunity before.

Raven stars in a five-issue miniseries written by Marv Wolfman, with art by Damion Scott. It takes place during the missing year, following Raven's attempts to live as a normal teenager and attend high school. Unfortunately, she inadvertently gets involved in a mystical struggle involving the Medusa Mask and has to fight to save the lives of her classmates. In Wizard Magazine #177, Wolfman briefly described the series, saying: "She needs to be alone and in charge of herself for the first time in her life." "This is more than a Raven tale" Until her new life.

Titans

Raven discovers that Trigon actually had more than one son, and that a trio of demonic children dedicated to their father are behind the latest attacks on the Titans. She is affected along with many other Titans by these three malevolent beings. Raven's three stepbrothers manipulate her and Beast Boy as keys to open a portal to Trigon's realm. Raven uses her own power to influence the greed of others and make her half-siblings steal what little Trigon had left behind. The portal closes and Trigon's sons, believing they have gained great power, leave.

Raven's stepbrothers later return and provoke her demonic side, causing her to leave the Titans and join them. However, the team was able to track them down and convince Raven to join the side of good once again. Later, she provides the Titans with a series of artifacts, all of them capable of killing her, as a term for her stay on the team.

Rebirth

Some time after leaving the Teen Titans, Raven set out to learn more about her family and her father Trigon. During this time she lived in a museum, until one day she found herself unconscious. When Raven arrived, she found herself in an unknown location alongside several other young superheroes, including her former teammate Beast Boy, the new Kid Flash, and Starfire. The identity of her captor was revealed to be Robin, who explained that she had kidnapped them to recruit them for her new Teen Titans team. She went on to explain that she needed each of her unique abilities to take down her grandfather's Ra's al Ghul, her uncle's Dajjal, and her League of Assassins.

Powers and abilities

Raven is an empath, capable of feeling and altering the emotions of others. She can induce calm, suppress negativity, and even make someone fall in love with her. By absorbing the pain of the wound into itself, it can induce rapid healing for the affected person. Raven can astral project a solid form of black energy that takes the form of a bird, called her own soul. Her soul can travel long distances, become intangible, and can communicate telepathically. She can act as a shield, as she can absorb a limited amount of energy and solid matter, regurgitating them before reintegrating with Raven. Using her soul, she can turn her physical body into her soul and transport or teleport herself and others a limited distance. Her soul can mentally dominate at least one person by enveloping them within herself. Raven' The soul of the self could initially remain outside her body for exactly five minutes; Failure to reintegrate in time would cause her mental torment, although she eventually overcame this limitation. In her third body, Raven gained the ability to fly. Raven is shown to be able to fly unassisted in space.

As the half-demon daughter of the interdimensional, Raven is very powerful and displays a large amount of abilities. She has shown the ability to control, manipulate and/or generate pure shadows and darkness. Raven can manipulate energy, time and emotions. This last ability manifests in different variations, from causing supremely destructive pain, inducing tension, fear-based illusions, and stealing emotions from others. In several cases, Raven has a deep knowledge of magic and has also displayed sorcery abilities, such as inducing Tim Drake's unconsciousness with a touch, releasing fireballs "within the folds of his cape" (as in The New Teen Titans Annual #4 (1988), or launching electrical blasts strong enough to wipe out all of her siblings and all of her adult Titans.

Like her brothers, Raven can induce and amplify one of the seven deadly sins (in her case, pride) in any living being, however, this will cause her to suffer episodes of blood and death for several days as side effects..

Raven also has limited precognition, allowing her to predict future events that are about to occur, although this happens unintentionally and infrequently. She has also been shown to be an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, despite the fact that she rarely uses these abilities.
