Radio control

Radio control (RC) is the technique that allows the control of an object from a distance and wirelessly by means of a transmitter remote control.

A child drives his radio-controlled boat in the Ystad marina.

Three fundamental techniques come into play in radio control: electronics that are responsible for transforming the commands given into radio waves in the transmitter and vice versa in the receiver, electricity, in charge of providing the necessary energy to the devices both the command (or transmitter) as the receiver and the mechanics in charge of moving the actuators (or servos) that give the electrical signals demodulated or decoded in mechanical movement.

There are all kinds of radio controlled model vehicles, the most popular being cars, planes, boats, helicopters and submarines.

Radio control devices - Naval Modeling

Within radio-controlled ship modeling, yacht regattas are held, both with motor and sailing models, and it is an increasingly widespread and promoted hobby within yacht clubs.

Sailing yachts

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) includes in appendix E of its Sailing Regatta Regulations the special rules for radio-controlled sailing yacht regattas. This federation recognizes four classes of models:

  • International One Metre (IOM)
  • International Marblehead (MAR)
  • International 10 Rater (10R)
  • International Radio A Class (RA)

Other widely used classes, in addition to the 4 recognized by ISAF, are:

  • RC Laser
  • Micro Magic
  • RG-65
  • Victoria
