Rachel Weisz
Rachel Hannah Weisz (London, March 7, 1970) is a British actress. He began his career in the early 1990s in the television series Inspector Morse, Scarlet and Black and The Advocates, and made his film debut in the feature film i>Death Machine from 1994, the year in which he participated in the play Design for Living by Noël Coward at the Gielgud Theatre.
His first appearance in Hollywood cinema occurred in the film Chain Reaction (1996) along with Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman. He achieved international recognition with his participation in the films The Mummy (1999) and its sequel The Mummy Returns (2001), and from then on he appeared in films praised by critics such as About a Boy (2002), The Constant Gardener (2006), The Whistleblower (2010), The Deep Blue Sea (2011), < i>The Lobster (2015), Disobedience (2017) and The Favorite (2018).
For her role in the film The Constant Gardener (2005) she won the Oscar in the category of best supporting actress, and her performance as Blanche DuBois in the play Un Streetcar Named Desire (2009) earned her a Lawrence Olivier Award for best actress. She also won a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Duchess Sarah Churchill in The Favorite (2018). During her career she has received other awards such as the Golden Globe, the Film Critics Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 2001 she began a romantic relationship with the American filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. After separating from the director in the late 2010s, she married British actor Daniel Craig on June 22, 2011. That same year she obtained American citizenship.
Early years
Weisz was born in Westminster, England on March 7, 1970 and grew up in the suburb of Hampstead Garden. Her mother, Edith Ruth (née Teich), was a teacher and psychotherapist born in Vienna, Austria, and her Father, George Weisz, is a Hungarian inventor and engineer. Weisz's parents moved to England during World War II. Her father is Jewish and her mother has classified herself as Catholic or Jewish. Weisz grew up in a "cerebral Jewish home" and refers to herself as Jewish. She has a sister, Minnie Weisz, a photographer and visual artist.
He studied at the North London Collegiate School. She later entered Benenden School and then enrolled at St Paul's Girls' School. School. She entered Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge, where she graduated in English literature. During her university years she appeared in several student productions, co-founding the student theater group Cambridge Talking Tongues, which won the student theater award awarded by The Guardian at the Edinburgh Festival thanks to an improvisation called Slight Possession.
Career
1992-1998
After her experience as a catwalk model, Weisz appeared in 1992 in the television movie Advocates II in a minor role. That same year he had a small role in the episode of the series Inspector Morse entitled "Twilight of the Gods" and acted in the BBC period drama Scarlet and Black alongside to Ewan McGregor. "Dirty Something", a one-hour episode of the series Screen Two, was Weisz's next appearance on British television. The opening scenes of the episode were filmed at the Glastonbury Festival.
Weisz began his career on the big screen with a minor role in the 1994 film Death Machine. He managed to obtain a larger role in the film Chain Reaction from 1996, where he shared a cast with Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman. While the film received negative reviews, it became a moderate financial success.She then starred as Miranda Fox in Stolen Beauty, directed by Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci.
In 1997 he starred in the American film The Man Who Came from the Sea and in 1998 he joined the cast of the British television comedy My Summer with Des. In 1999 Weisz played the role of Greta in the historical film Sunshine. That same year she starred in the film that brought her international fame and became a box office hit, The Mummy, in which he played the romantic interest of the character played by Brendan Fraser. 2004–09
In 2004 the actress appeared in the comedy Envy alongside Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Christopher Walken. The film was a commercial and critical failure. A year later he starred alongside Keanu Reeves in Constantine, a film based on the comic Hellblazer. The publication Film Threat referred to his performance in the film as "effective in projecting skepticism and terror simultaneously."
In 2005 she joined the main cast of the Fernando Meirelles film The Constant Gardener, film adaptation of the novel of the same name by author John le Carré. In the film Weisz played an activist named Tessa Quayle who meets her death after denouncing illegal tests carried out on Nigerian children. The Constant Gardener was internationally acclaimed and earned the actress an Academy Award for best actress supporting actress, a Golden Globe for best supporting actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award in the same category. The British newspaper The Guardian referred to Weisz, stating that her performance in The Constant Gardener "placed her among the leading British actors of the moment", while an article published by the BBC stated that "Weisz is exceptional and gives a memorable performance." In 2006 she received a Brittania Award in the category of best British artist of the year, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
In 2006 she starred in Darren Aronofsky's drama film The Fountain of Life. The San Francisco Chronicle called her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth "less convincing than her previous roles." That same year she provided the voice of Saphira in the fantasy film Eragon and refused to participate in the film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor due to her dissatisfaction with the script. American actress Maria Bello eventually played the female character in the film. Her next films include the 2007 Wong Kar-wai-directed drama My Blueberry Nights and Rian Johnson's 2008 film The Brothers Bloom alongside Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo. In 2009 she played the lead role of Hypatia of Alexandria in the historical drama Agora, a Spanish production directed by Alejandro Amenábar.
2010–present
Weisz starred in the film The Whistleblower, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010. The film was based on a real-life incident of human trafficking by some employees of the contractor DynCorp. During its premiere, the intense description of the kidnappers' treatment of the victims caused a woman in the audience to faint. That same year he provided his voice as a guest star on the animated series The Simpsons in the twenty-second season episode "How Munched is That Birdie in the Window?". In 2011 he acted in the film adaptation of Terence Rattigan's work The Deep Blue Sea, in Fernando Meirelles' drama film 360 alongside Jude Law and Anthony Hopkins, in the thriller Page Eight and in Dream House alongside Daniel Craig.
He filmed some scenes for the experimental film To the Wonder, written and directed by Terrence Malick and starring Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams. However, her scenes were removed in the final edit.She also appeared in the 2012 action film The Bourne Legacy, based on the literary series written by Robert Ludlum.
Weisz played the role of Evanora in the film Oz the Great and Powerful, released on March 7, 2013. In 2015 she appeared in the drama Youth and in the science fiction production The Lobster, a film that won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2016 he acted in the drama film The Light Between Oceans in a cast made up of Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, and she played Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt in Denial, a film production directed by Mick Jackson.
In 2017 Rachel starred in the film My Cousin Rachel, based on the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, and was part of the cast of the film The Mercy, based on the life by the British navigator Donald Crowhurst, under the direction of James Marsh. In 2018 she starred in the dramatic feature film Disobedience under the direction of Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio. In the film, Weisz plays Ronit Krushka, a Jew who has a lesbian affair with a childhood friend. At the end of 2018, the period comedy-drama "La Favorita", directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, premieres. in which he shares the bill with Olivia Colman and Emma Stone. The film wins the Silver Lion (Grand Jury Prize) at the Venice International Film Festival.
Theatre
Her performance as Gilda in the 1994 play Design for Living was acclaimed by critics and earned her the London Critics Circle Award in the category of best debut. In 1999 she played the role of Catherine in the play Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams. The same year, the actress appeared in The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute at the Almeida Theater. In 2009 she played Blanche DuBois in Rob Ashford's version of the play A Streetcar Named Desire. The Daily Telegraph newspaper noted that in it the actress "meets the challenge magnificently." Weisz and her husband Daniel Craig starred in a Broadway play titled Betrayal, performing from October 2013 to January 2014. Personal life
Weisz had a long relationship with American film producer and director Darren Aronofsky, from 2001 to November 2010. They have a son, Henry Chance, born on May 31, 2006 in New York. The couple resided in East Village, Manhattan. On November 9, 2010, the couple announced their breakup after nine years of relationship.
She married British actor Daniel Craig on June 22, 2011 in a secret ceremony in New York, after several months of courtship. She currently lives with Craig in two large cities, London and New York. In April 2018 it was announced that Weisz and Craig were expecting their first child together. On September 1, 2018, Weisz gave birth to a daughter.
In 2009, Weisz expressed his opinion on the use of botox in the magazine Harper's Bazaar: «It should be prohibited for actors, just like steroids for athletes. Acting is based on expression; Why would you want to fix a frown? » During her career she has appeared on the cover of magazines such as insideKENT , Vogue and Esquire . She has been the inspirational muse of fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez and was named global brand ambassador for L'Oréal in 2010.
