Quidditch is the name of a fictional sport, later adapted to real life, played by characters from the wizarding world in the Harry Potter series of novels, written by J.K. Rowling. In the books, it is practiced at various schools of magic, including Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In addition, it is the most popular sport in the magical world and is practiced throughout the world, with national teams in each of the member countries of the magical community. The main feature is that it is played by flying on magic broomsticks.

Several types of brooms are mentioned in the saga, for example: the Sweepers, the Shooting Stars, the Silver Arrows, the Comets, the Nimbus (of various models), and the Firebolt (almost exclusive broom for professionals), of which Harry Potter has a model given to him by his godfather Sirius Black.

In the Harry Potter books it is said that Quidditch is a fairly old sport and was created based on Kuereditch Mars, a sport of which Gertie Keddle, a A neighbor of the Kueredich swamp, she had seen a game in 1014. After being created and approved as the world sport of wizards, certain things have been changed in it, for example the non-inclusion of animals in the game, such as the golden snidget, for fear of their extinction, and they were replaced by the current ball that was called snitch in honor of the animals. The full story is told in the book Quidditch Through the Ages, written by J. K. Rowling and presented as if it were a copy from the Hogwarts library itself.

Despite being a dangerous game, no one is known to have died from a bludger or other circumstances. It is known of players who have disappeared to appear in the Sahara months later.

It is played in an elliptical-shaped stadium (150 meters of semi-major axis and 55 of semi-minor axis), each side is equipped with three rings located at a different level of height. Three different types of balls are used for the game: a Quaffle, two Bludgers and a golden snitch. The most important ball during the match is the golden snitch (a golden ball the size of a large walnut and incredibly fast) since the player of the team that manages to catch it wins 150 points and the game ends automatically. The quaffle is the one used to score by passing it through the hoops of the opposing team, by passing them through the hoop they earn 10 points; hunters play with it. The bludgers are balls that attack the players, they are large, heavy and fly with force; They are received by the hitters, who use small bats to prevent them from hitting one of their teams and conversely send them to the opposing team to hit them.

The game pits two teams of seven players each, distributed according to their objective: one keeper, two strikers, three hunters, and one seeker. The keeper is the goalkeeper who is in charge of preventing the opposing team from inserting the quaffle into their respective team's hoops. Beaters are in charge of repelling bludgers, to protect their team from them. The hunters are in charge of trying to introduce the quaffle through the opposing hoops.

Lastly, the seeker is in charge of being attentive throughout the game in order to catch the snitch before the opposing team. When catching the "snitch" the game ends; games have been known to go on for months before the snitch could be caught and even some have been declared a tie due to players being unable to continue. The team that catches it scores 150 points. Even if a team has caught the snitch, the team that has accumulated the most points wins, so the team that caught the snitch does not always win.

Game mechanics

The duration of a Quidditch match is unpredictable and indefinite. The game ends when the golden snitch has been caught by the seeker. Meanwhile, the game continues. The record length for a Quidditch match is three months, in which players had to constantly change.[citation needed]

Scores are ten points for each goal scored, and 150 points for catching the golden snitch. There have been matches in which, with the difference between the opponents being greater than one hundred and fifty points, the strategy has become to mislead those who are winning so that they do not find the golden snitch.

There are professional leagues for this sport, and world leagues that are held every four years between the different wizarding nations (similar to the Soccer World Cup). During the plot of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), the Quidditch World Cup final takes place, in which Ireland won victory over Bulgaria, despite the fact that the Bulgarian team seeker Viktor Krum caught the snitch. The matches must be attended live, as they are not broadcast on any television - wizards do not use Muggle artifacts. But you can listen to them live on the radio, or read the results in a magician's sports magazine.

As a rule, on top of the brooms and once the game has started, you cannot put a spell on any player, nor use any magical object such as the wand (actually, you can, but you cannot use it with the balls or with opposing players or the public), as well as the use of any magic potion such as "Félix Felicis" also known as 'Liquid Luck', which is strictly prohibited for any sporting event and is considered doping for Quidditch.

Players

There are four types of players: hunter, seeker, striker, and guardian.

Each one has a function. The chaser tries to score with the quaffle, the beater tries to stop the bludgers from taking down their players and try to take down the opponents, the seeker tries to catch the snitch and the keeper tries to not get scored.

Rules

  • Players cannot leave the lines that limit the playing field, although they can fly as high as they want. The Quaffle is delivered to the opposing team if any player gets off limits.
  • The arbitrator may grant criminality if a fault is committed. A single assaulted team Hunter flies from the central circle to the annotation area to try to score. The Guardian of the opposing team can try to block the shot, but no other player should interfere.
  • Contact is allowed, but players cannot hold another's broom or any part of their body.
  • Player replacements are not allowed, even if anyone is too hurt to continue (exemptions are made if the game is prolonged for too long, and players are too fatigued).
  • A Quidditch game can only conclude by catching the golden snitch, or if the captains of both teams agree to give it up.

Fouls

Rowling has written that there are 700 Quidditch fouls listed by the Department of Wizarding Sports and Games, but most of these are not open to the public as the Department fears wizards reading the list of fouls "they might have bad ideas. It is said that all the fouls occurred during the first Quidditch World Cup. Apparently most are now impossible to commit because of the enforced rule regarding the use of wands against opponents (imposed in 1538). The most common faults are listed here:

  • Blagging

Applied to: all players.

Description: Players cannot grab an opponent's broom brush to slow their flight (Draco Malfoy commits this foul in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, preventing Harry from catching the Snitch).

  • Blatching

Applied to: all players.

Description: Players may not fly with the intent to crash into another (Slytherin's substitute Seeker Harper breaks this rule by crashing into Harry after to insult Ronald Weasley. This occurs in the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince).

  • Blurting

Applied to: all players.

Description: Players cannot hold the handles of brooms to throw an opponent off course.

  • Bumphing

Applied to: Hitters.

Description: Beaters cannot send Bludgers towards spectators (although Harry jokingly orders one of his Beaters to send one to Zacharias Smith for his comments in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), nor the Keeper, unless the Quaffle is inside from the scoring box (in the first movie, however, Marcus Flint, a Hunter, commits this foul with a Striker's Bat, and is penalized by Madam Hooch for it).

  • Cobbing

Applied to: all players.

Description: Players may not overuse their elbows against opponents (Marcus Flint, Slytherin Chaser, commits this foul against Gryffindor Chaser, Angelina Johnson, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

  • Flacking

Applied to: Guardians.

Description: You cannot defend the goal posts from behind by pushing the Quaffles out of the hoops: you must defend them from the front.

  • Haversacking

Applied to: Hunters.

Description: They must not make contact with the Quaffle while it is going through a hoop (the Quaffle has to be thrown through the hoop).

  • Quaffle-pocking

Applied to: Hunters.

Description: They must not sabotage the Quaffle in any way (for example, pin it to make it fall faster or zigzag).

  • Snitchnip

Applies to: everyone except Seekers.

Description: touch or catch the Golden Snitch.

  • Stooging

Applied to: Hunters.

Description: No more than one Chaser is allowed inside the scoring area.

Quidditch at Hogwarts

Each year a tournament is organized at Hogwarts School for Wizards between its four student houses (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin). Six matches are played per year (except during Harry's fourth year of study, due to the Triwizard Tournament, as well as the second year when the tournament was canceled due to events involving the Chamber of Secrets). The house that wins the most games gets the quidditch Cup.

Main known players of the Hogwarts teams

We don't know the composition of the teams participating in the tournament for the seventh year since the action of the seventh book takes place mainly outside of Hogwarts.

Muggle Quidditch

Muggle Quidditch is a mixed sport based on the Quidditch mentioned in the Harry Potter novels. It is popular with fans of the series, children, and fans of fictional sports. There are different versions for Muggle Quidditch, and the number of players can vary depending on which version is played. Due to the lack of magical devices, Muggle Quidditch is played on land, and in some cases is limited to a sports field comparable in size to a football field. In addition to being played on land, there are some versions that play it on skates in hockey fields, others on grass fields and others on sports slabs. In addition, there are several teams already formed in Spain such as the Barcelona Eagles and other teams in training such as the Dementors of Galicia or the Nightmare Grims of Tarragona or the ULPGC of the Canary Islands.
