Qābūs ibn Sa'īd Āl Sa'īd (قابوس بن سعيد آل سعيد, in Arabic; Salalah, Dhofar, November 18, 1940-Muscat, January 10, 2020) He was the Sultan of Oman, a title he held from the overthrow of his father, Sultan Said bin Taimur, in 1970 until his death in 2020.

Biography

Qabus was a patrilineal descendant of the sultans of Muscat, Oman, and Zanzibar. Since Qabus was the Omani sultan, he traditionally had absolute power in the country. He held the posts of Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Defense Minister and Finance Minister. The first problem Qabus had to deal with was an armed communist insurrection in South Yemen. The sultan quickly defeated the raid.

In 1992, Sultan Qabus ordered the construction of a mosque in the Bausher Vilayate, Muscat Governorate. When the sultan came to the throne in 1970, he built a more modest mosque in Muscat, but in 1992 he had plans drawn up to build the world's largest mosque, called the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. On May 5, 2001, after four years, 600 workers and 12 million hours of work for the main carpet, Sultan Qabus knelt down to pray in the mosque and on what was the world's largest carpet. In 2012 at least 50 Omani activists and writers were detained in a police crackdown carried out between late May and early June.

The only internal problem that can arise[citation needed] for the sultanate is the succession of Sultan Qabus, divorced from his wife and cousin, with whom he had no children. His fortune is estimated at $1.1 billion.

Death

Through an official statement through the ONA agency, the death of Qabus bin Sa‘id Al Sa‘id was announced on January 10, 2020 after several years of illness. Bin Sa'id had traveled to Belgium at the beginning of December to have a medical check-up for an alleged recurrence of colorectal cancer diagnosed in 2015. He passed away at the age of seventy-nine.

Succession

On January 11, 2020, Omani state television claimed that the authorities had opened Sultan Qaboos bin Said's letter naming his successor, announcing shortly after that Haitham bin Tariq, minister of culture, would become the new ruling sultan of Oman. Haitham bin Tariq has two sons and two daughters.
