Puffy (パフィー; Pafi), or Puffy AmiYumi (パフィー・アミユミ), is a pop and rock duo consisting of the singers Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura. It is one of the most important Japanese groups of its kind both in the world and in Japan.

Career

Fans

Puffy currently has fans not only in Japan but also in other parts of the world such as the United States, where they also spent a season touring across the country, in Europe and Latin America.

Beginnings

Ami Onuki, a native of Tokyo (September 18, 1973), and Yumi Yoshimura, a native of Osaka (January 30, 1975), auditioned separately for Sony; Ami entered an audition for pop singers, while Yumi auditioned for actresses and singers. The producers discovered that their voices combined harmoniously and decided to unite them in a duet in 1990 which they named Puffy, guided by the Japanese singer Tamio Okuda and the musician American Andy Sturmer. They were hired by two different talent agencies and formed a duet in 1993, which would soon trigger the so-called Puffy-Mania, a term that was used by the Japanese press to refer to the increase in sales of related objects. with the band, from key rings to compact discs. The phenomenon began in 1994 and is still in force.

It was AmiYumi

In 1996 they released their first single "Asia no Junshin" (Innocent Asia or True Asia), quickly sold millions of copies and released numerous singles that would not debut on CD until two years later ("Kore ga Watashi no Ikiru Michi", "Circuit no Musume&# 34;, "Nagisa ni Matsuwaru Et Cetera" and "Mother/Nehorina Hahorina"), their first CD, AmiYumi, was also released around this time. "Tour!, Puffy!, tour!".

It was Alone

In 1997 Ami and Yumi released two singles, "Honey" (Ami) and V. A. C. A. T. I. O. N. (Yumi), their second album, Solo Solo, was released the same year, this was a double CD with 7 tracks per CD, all solo (one disc by Ami and one by Yumi).

Jet Age

Puffy-Mania reached its peak in 1998, when they released the album Jet-CD and embarked on the Jet-Tour. Jet-CD (Or just Jet). Many songs previously published as singles appeared on this CD, among the most remembered are Kore ga watashi no ikiru Michi and Nagisa ni matsuwaru etc. Before its premiere, the single Ai no Shirushi was released. This same year they made their debut in a television program called Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Puffy, which appeared in prime time, in this program numerous national and foreign celebrities appeared, including Ayumi Hamasaki, Lenny Kravitz, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone and Garbage.

Their dress style was simple: jeans, sneakers, short-sleeved T-shirts, and matching hairstyles, a look that made them look like twin sisters. Commemorative dolls of the Jet-Tour were released under the line of Japanese Jenny Friend dolls (similar to Barbie), these had high value (they were for collectors only) and were sold together.

It was Fever * Fever

Fever*Fever was released in 1999. It is a 15 track CD; here, Ami and Yumi began to compose the lyrics of their songs, this is the most original and varied CD, Puffy's look changes slightly, looking for more extravagant hairstyles and wearing overalls from time to time. Jenny Friend dolls were released again, containing 4 Singles: "Tararan", "Puffy De Rumba", "Nichiyoubi no Musume" and "Yume no Tame ni".

It was Spike

Puffy decides to make himself known in the West; due to legal issues she changed her name to Puffy AmiYumi. Spike was released in the year 2000, first in Japan and then in the United States and Canada; the CD itself is the same but they have different covers. PUFFY-Mania had broken out in the West, their singles were "Umi Eto" and "Boogie Woogie No 5".

It was The Hit Parade

Puffy's style was polished, now they used more elaborate clothes and Yumi's preference for darker clothes began to show (due to the depression she had after divorcing T.M). The Hit Parade, released in 2002, is a CD that compiles 10 Japanese songs from the 70's and 80's. Their singles were "Hurricane" and "Aoi Namida".

Era An Illustrated History

Puffy AmiYumi released their new CD in the United States. "An Illustrated History" collects her best hits, which helped them become better known in the West; that same year they canceled their show Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Puffy and concentrated all their attention on promoting it in America.

It was Nice

The CD was released in Japan in 2003 and was slightly modified for its American version, as new songs were included and some were removed, as well as some songs debuted in English, including the opening of the Teen Titans series, a Cartoon Network series that was created by Glen Murakami. The theme was created by Sturmer and Guitar Wolf (the guitarist) performed the guitar solo. Puffy AmiYumi embarked on a tour of Japan, the United States and Canada, Planet Tokyo is perhaps the most memorable song from this period. Another single from this album was Atarashii Hibi, released 2 years earlier.

I was 59 and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi

59 is a short 8-song CD released in Japan and the United States in 2004, this CD included the English and Japanese versions of Teen Titans, the opening sequence of the Japanese animation series SD Gundam Force (Sunrise) and six previously unreleased tracks, including So Long Zero, the first English version of Invisible Tomorrow.

The gang had spread throughout the United States and a new product of the band was launched, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, an animated series created by Sam Register and produced by Renegade Animation in conjunction with Cartoon Network, the series chronicles the adventures of Ami, Yumi and their manager Kaz. Ami and Yumi's personalities were extremely exaggerated and their appearances radically changed. The biggest attraction of this series was that the soundtrack was composed by the Japanese duo.

Puffy-Mania in the West broke out. All kinds of products based on both real and animated Puffy AmiYumi became top sellers. A hits CD soundtrack was released throughout the Americas and Europe, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: Music from the Series (which contained the single Hi Hi) was a bestseller. This series helped AmiYumi to be promoted all over the world.

The following year, Hi Hi premiered a new season. The success of the series made PUFFY become the favorite guests on television; they even participated in the Thanksgiving Day parade.

Splurge era and 10th anniversary

In 2006 Pufy AmiYumi released a new CD, Splurge. As usual, the American version differs from the original, since it includes two remixes and two songs in English. Instead, the Japanese version has two songs in Japanese and a cover of Basket Case, Green Day's hit. This era is quite important, as Puffy AmiYumi celebrates her tenth anniversary, the tour & # 34; Splurge Splurge Splurge & # 34; tours throughout Japan and the United States. Here you can see that Ami and Yumi change a lot in their clothing, since they wear exaggerated hairstyles and very elaborate clothing. Among the singles are Nice Buddy/Hajimari no Uta, Mogura-like and Tokyo I'm on My Way. Due to rating declines and legal issues, the Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi series was cancelled.

TV Ashi Launches Live Action Mini Series Called Hi Hi PUFFY Bu On January 16, 2006, Onuki and Yoshimura were named "Goodwill Ambassadors" to the United States to encourage tourism to Japan as part of the government's Visit Japan campaign. Kyodo, Yomiuri Shimbun.

A DVD and a special book were released, Puffy - Ayumi 10 th Anniversary Book and TOUR! PUFFY! TOUR! 10! FINAL! AT HIBIYA YAGAI DAIONGAKUDO! The official page of Puffy AmiYumi in Japanese organizes a poll, their fans were able to vote to select the best PUFFY songs, the selected ones appeared in a new compilation called Hit&Fun, along with an unreleased track called "Oto Memorial" on Valentine's Day 2007.

It was Honeycreeper

In October 2007, Puffy released the album Honeycreeper, which has been moderately successful. Honeycreeper will come along with tracks like "Boom Boom beat", "Oriental Diamond", "Kuchibiru Motion" and "Closet full of love".

It was Puffy AmiYumi X Puffy

In the Puffy Story, this was the second cover disc; Along with The Hit Parade, its only difference was that the songs were not newly recorded, but were versions that Puffy had already done throughout its history from 1996 to the present. The only newly made song was Nichiyoubi Yori no Shisha by The High-Lows Band, performed at Countdown Japan 08/09. Other more recent Songs are "Tokyo Hanabi", "Ningen wa Mou Owarida!", Furontia no Piaonia ("Frontier no Pioneer") by Tamio Okuda and Not Listening by Snuff. The CD was accompanied by 3 Bonus Tracks, Hi Hi ~Spanish TV Mix~, Hi Hi ~Portuguese TV Mix~, Happy Birthday to You <DearΟΟΟver.>

Era Bring It!

Bring It! is the eleventh album by this group, which achieved a record on the Oricon Chart at No.8 in its 1.er Dia y Debuted at No.17 3 days later. One of their most recent tracks is Hiyori Hime (used as the opening for Genji Monogatari Sennenki), however their most recent single, albeit off the album, is "Dareka Ga", which served as the opening for the last Naruto Shippuden movie. Bring It! was highly anticipated both by its fans worldwide and by Puffy AmiYumi themselves. This album is available in France under Wasabi Records and in Japan under Ki/oon Records.

Musical inspiration

Their music has been largely a cooperative effort between producer Tamio Okuda, American singer-songwriter Andy Sturmer of the band Jellyfish, studio musicians, and Ami and Yumi themselves. The voices of both resemble those of the American group The Roches. They usually sing together with harmonies and sounds that they seem to share from artists like The Beatles, ABBA, The Who and the Carpenters. Their genre is usually defined as J-Rock/J-Pop (better specified as Shibuya-kei), although Ami and Yumi themselves point out that their music is difficult to put into a specific genre because it has different influences.
