Puerto Ayacucho is a Venezuelan city, capital of the Amazonas state, being the largest town in the state, it was founded on December 9, 1924, by the engineer-geologist Santiago Aguerreverre. It has a population, according to the 2011 census, of 125,840 inhabitants. It is located on the right bank of the Orinoco River in front of the Colombian corregimiento of Casuarito; north of the state in the Atures municipality.

Its inhabitants are mostly mestizos, the result of a mixture between indigenous people and Europeans, mainly Spanish. Some indigenous ethnic groups that live in communities surrounding the capital are: the Yanomami, Baré, Wotuja, Jiwi, and the Yekuanas.

History

Puerto Ayacucho began to be built in 1924 at the initiative of the regime of Juan Vicente Gómez, put on alert about the strategic riches of the region, and was officially founded on December 9, 1928, in commemoration of the Battle of Ayacucho, by the engineer and geologist Santiago Aguerrevere. With this, it replaced San Fernando de Atabapo, which had been the administrative center of this old district, then a province, later a federal territory and finally a state. Located on a huge black granite rock, facing the Colombian shoreline, the city is today the most important town in Amazonas and a river port that brings together the economic activity of the area.
