Ptolemy V Epiphanes (Greek: Πτολεμαίος Επιφανής) (210-181 BC) was king of Egypt from the age of five. He belongs to the Ptolemaic dynasty. He was the last of the great lágidas kings, after him dynastic and civil struggles (together with Roman interventionism) characterized the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty.

Biography

His reign began in the face of internal rebellions and foreign invasions. The Alexandrian forces managed to repel the invaders, and defeat Anjunnefer, the local native king of Upper Egypt. However, most of the outermost regions of the Ptolemaic kingdom were lost towards the end of his reign.

The official coronation took place in the year 196 B.C. C., in Memphis, according to the traditional Egyptian ritual. On the occasion of this event, the Egyptian clergy published a decree written in three alphabets: hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek, on a stone stele: the Rosetta Stone; this decree was discovered in 1799, definitively contributing to the modern decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing.

Kings Antiochus III the Great (of the Seleucid dynasty) and Philip V of Macedonia declared war on him. He came to Rome to help him, but this intervention was disastrous for the future of the Egyptian kingdom.

Married in 193 B.C. C. with the Seleucid princess Cleopatra I, daughter of Antiochus III. His son Ptolemy VI Philometor ('he who loves his mother') succeeded him on the throne.
