Provinces of Indonesia
The province (in Indonesian: Provinsi or propinsi) is the level of territorial division of Indonesia that is located just below the level national. This word comes from the Dutch language provincie due to Indonesia's Dutch colonial past.
Each province is headed by a governor (gubernur in Indonesian). Indonesia is divided into 38 provinces. The following list groups the provinces by island (note: the islands are not an official Indonesian subdivision). The Indonesian name is in italics.
There are three special cases in the territorial division of Indonesia: the province level (formerly level I) is also called Special Area (Daerah Khusus in Indonesian) for the city of Jakarta, or < i>Daerah Istimewa for Aceh and for Yogyakarta. Of Indonesia's 38 provinces, 4 have special status: Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Yogyakarta Region, Papua Island, and Jakarta Region.
The provinces are divided into regencies and cities.

Former provinces

After Indonesia's independence, eight provinces were established. West Java, Central Java, East Java and Moluccas still exist today despite later divisions, while Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes and Nusa Tenggara, formerly Lesser Sunda (Sunda Kecil) were completely extinct dividing them into new provinces. The province of Central Sumatra existed from 1948 to 1957, while East Timor was annexed as a province from 1976 until its transfer of power to UNTAET in 1999 before its independence as a country in 2002.
