Provinces of Ecuador
In Ecuador, a province is a political-administrative division made up of the union of two or more cantons. Currently, this country has twenty-four (24) provinces.
The administrative division of Ecuador into provinces has its origin in the time of Spanish rule, since at that time what is now the Republican territory was divided into the provinces of Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Jaén and Maynas (called governments at that time). In the Gran Colombia period this division underwent some changes, as the Ecuadorian territory was divided into 3 departments (Ecuador, Azuay and Guayaquil), each of which was subdivided into provinces and these in turn into cantons. After the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1830, the departments were abolished, leaving only the provinces and cantons.
