Provinces of Afghanistan
Afghanistan is subdivided into 34 provinces or velayat (in Dari: ولایت, wilāya; in Pashto: ولایت, wilāya ), which are subdivided into a total of 398 districts (Dari: ولسوالی, vulusvāli; Pashto: ولسوالۍ, (wuləswāləi). The provinces are headed by a governor (wāli), who is appointed by the government in the capital Kabul.
Around 1950, Afghanistan consisted of ten provinces, a number that has expanded over the years to the current 34. The division as it exists today emerged in 2004 after Dāykundī and Panjshir separated from Uruzgān and Parwān respectively.
Politics
Each of the provinces has a governor and is represented in politics by two members of the House of Elders.
