History

The Spanish foundation of Juli was given by the Dominican Legionaries on April 2, 1565, which is between 3840 and 4000 m s. n. m. Juli, called the Great Rome of America, is the capital of the province of Chucuito one hour and ten minutes from Puno (82 km), it is a beautiful and attractive corner of renewed sympathy for national tourism and foreign. It is located next to Lake Titicaca, it has an international pier, its commercial activity is active all year round, intensifying on the days of the trade fair: Sunday and Wednesday of each week.

Juli has a cultural heritage that is ten thousand years old. Its testimonies are multiple, from parietal art to stone monuments from the Sillumocco, Tianhuanaco, Lupi Jaki or Lupacas and Inca cultures. Part of this heritage is represented by stelae, monoliths, walls and chullpas, as well as the temples of San Ildelfonso, today Santa Cruz de Jerusalem; Santa María la Mayor, today the Assumption of Our Lady; the Temple of San Juan Bautista, known as San Juan de Letran, and that of Santo Tomás de Aquinas, known as San Pedro Mártir.

In this confine, there is a cultural richness that is unattainable in describing each of them, the main one being the traditional karapulis, quena quenas, which is celebrated every September 14, where the participant plays his quena dressed in a cover of Tiger skin. It is known that this customary dance accompanied by boisterous kusillos, also known as Orko Fiesta, has been practiced since 1826. The Incas participate, who carry out fighting rituals with strong whips, throw oranges and figs that predict that there will be potatoes and chuño (dehydrated potato), the other peasant communities carry out planting rituals to obtain an abundant harvest.
