Province of Canchis

The province of Canchis is one of the thirteen provinces that make up the department of Cuzco in Peru. It borders the north with the province of Quispicanchi, for the East with the department of Puno, for the south with the province of Canas and the west with the province of Acomayo.

HISTORY

After Independence, it was founded as a province of ink. On October 14, 1833, in the government of President Agustín Gamarra, the Province of Ink was divided into two new provinces: the province of Canchis and the province of Canas. On August 29, 1834 the city of Sicuani became the capital.

Geography

The province of Canchis is located in the Upper Basin of the Urubamba River, in the department of Cuzco (officially " Department of Cusco "), covering an area of 3999.27 km². Its geographical position is between the 14º 30 ’and 56’ coordinates of southern latitude and 71º 24 ’and 71º 39’ west longitude.

In the field of the territory of Canchis, there is an average altitude of 3548 m s. n. m., The province of Canchis includes the districts of Combapata, Checacupe, Marangani, Pitumarca, San Pablo, San Pedro, Sicuani and ink. It constitutes one of the so -called " four high provinces of Cusco " Together with Canas, Espinar and Chumbivilcas, a group of which it is a reference for being the most populated, urbanized and better regionally connected.

The province of Canchis, has an approximate population of 97,000 inhabitants. It has a privileged geography, because it is located in the Vilcanota mountain range, which makes it easily accessible between the other provinces of the south of the country, and it is also the mandatory step on the route to Arequipa, Puno and Bolivia through the Pan -American Highway of the Sierra Sur.

Capital

The capital of the province of Canchis is the city of Sicuani, which has an approximate population of 55,000 inhabitants and is located at 3,554 m s. no. m. Sicuani, is the political and administrative center of the province of Canchis, in terms of population it represents 60% of the total of the province, and it is the second most populous city in the Cusco region, only behind the capital departmental. It is the economic and commercial center of the southern provinces of the region and constitutes a communication hub between the Cusco-Puno-Arequipa corridors.
