The term profession (from the Latin professio, -ōnis) designates a job or occupation that is exercised in exchange for remuneration and that requires academic training. Likewise, it defines the set of professionals who practice it. The professional activity requires specialized knowledge, professional training (educational training of different levels -basic, medium or higher-, according to each case), control over the content of the work and own organization through professional associations, unions or guilds), in addition to standards ethics (professional deontology) and a certain spirit of service to the community (altruism). The meaning of the term takes its use as a synonym for traditional trades, a natural denomination until the middle of the 19th century. The term professional has also been generated to define the person who performs it.
