Príncipe de Vergara is a station on lines 2 and 9 of the Madrid Metro located under the intersection of Calle de Alcalá and Calle Príncipe de Vergara (from which it takes its name), in the Goya neighborhood (Salamanca district).

History

The station was inaugurated on June 14, 1924, the platforms of line 2 were opened to the public with the first section inaugurated. The station is very shallow, its platforms are located under Calle Alcalá, to the east of the intersection with Calle Príncipe de Vergara, and the vestibule with a single entrance is to the west of the platforms. During the Franco dictatorship, the station adopted the name General Mola, just like the street. In 1981, during the mayoralty of Enrique Tierno Galván, General Mola Street recovered its original name, becoming Príncipe de Vergara. However, the station continued with the same name for three more years.

In 1984 it recovered its original name. In the 1970s, construction began on the line 9 station, which included a link with the Velázquez station that was never used. The station was open to the public long after construction began due to the period of crisis suffered by the network after 1975. The platforms are deeper and under Príncipe de Vergara street. and it was opened to the public on February 24, 1986 within the central section of the line that linked the northern and southern sections already in operation.

Between August 10 and 25, 2019, the station was closed for modernization works, so trains passed by without stopping there.

It has been reformed to make it accessible through the installation of six new elevators, whose works have finished in July 2021.
