The word country may refer to a nation or a region.
It is the main synonym of nation: a geographical area and a politically independent entity with its own government, administration, laws, most of the time a constitution, police, armed forces, tax laws and a human group.
See state nation to know the history of the development of modern national states.
See status for a definition under international law.
Many times, parts of a state with a different history or culture are called countries: Wales, Scotland, England, Basque Country, Palestine, Northern Ireland, Catalonia, Brittany, Cornualles, Galicia, among others, are considered countrieseven though they are not national states, but rather nations, regions or provinces that constitute a larger state.
It may also refer to regions or even regions without major cultural differences with those of the surrounding area (as in Country of La Alcarria). This use is especially given when talking about the regions of France (the Country of the Garona, the Loire Country...) since the Spanish term country comes from French pays, language in which the term also has this polysemia.
Country according to the dictionary of the Spanish Royal Academy is: "1. m. Nation, region, province or territory. ", therefore, while being a very common word associated with "sovereign state" or "national state" as synonyms, its fan is much wider and should never be limited exclusively to these concepts

It is bordered to the north by the Democratic People ' s Republic of Korea (RPDC or North Korea), with which it formed a single country until 1945. To the east is the sea of Korea or the East Sea, to the south the strait of Korea, which separates it from Japan, and to the west the Yellow Sea. Its territory comprises the south half of the Korean peninsula encompassing some three thousand islands that surround it, including Jeju, Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Approximately half of the country's population lives in its capital, Seoul, or its metropolitan area, which is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world (some sources place it as the second most populous, only behind Tokyo, in Japan). Korea is one of the oldest civilizations in the world.
Jikji, the first book printed on a printing press with metallic phones, in 1377, 62 years before the Gutenberg Printer.18Archaeological research revealed that the peninsula was populated from the Inferior Paleolithic. Over time, Korea's history has been turbulent with numerous wars, including invasions of both China and Japan. Since the establishment of the modern republic in 1948, South Korea fought with the aftermath of previous war conflicts such as the Japanese occupation (1910-1945), in addition to the Korean War (1950-1953) and decades of authoritarian governments. While the government officially adopted a Western-style democracy since the founding of the republic, the presidential election processes suffered great irregularities. It was only until 1987 when the first fair and direct elections were held, so since then the country is considered a multi-party democracy.
