Polyalthia
Polyalthia is a genus of phanerogamous plants with 269 species belonging to the Annonaceae family. They are native to the Old World tropics as far as Australia.
Description
They are trees and shrubs, with simple or glabrous hairs. Flowers mostly bisexual, solitary or in 2-many flower cymes or fascicles, extra-axillary, axillary or opposite leaf-like, occasionally on trunk. Sepals 3, valvate or slightly overlapping. Petals 6, biseriate, valvate, subequal, often very large and showy. Stamens mostly numerous, filaments very short, wedge-shaped. Carpels few to numerous. Monocarp fruits few to many, indehiscent, ellipsoid, ovoid or subglobose, stipitate or subsessile.
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Carl Ludwig Blume and published in Flora Javae Annonac.: 68. 1830. The type species is: Polyalthia subcordata (Blume) Blume.
