Afghanistan's electoral ballot.

The political situation in Afghanistan is complex and confusing. More than twelve years after the overthrow of the Taliban regime in the wake of US intervention in the country, Afghanistan is in many respects a state in name only.

President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai rules the capital and not much else over the rest of the country, which remains highly unstable. There are still pockets of the Taliban that could re-emerge and a series of local warlords seeking to maintain and increase their regional power.

The United Nations and other organizations play a crucial role in rebuilding the country. In any case, it is very difficult to predict what will be the same in the long term.

The last parliamentary elections were held in September 2005.

The parliament of Afghanistan is bicameral, its chambers are: the House of the Elders and the House of the People.
