The pole vault or also called the pole vault is a test of current athletics that aims to overcome a crossbar located at a great height with the help of a pole (pole) flexible. This pole is typically 4 to 5 meters in length and is usually made of fiberglass and carbon, materials that replaced bamboo and metal back to back in the 1960s.
Reasons for failed attempt:
- The slat does not stay on the athlete's action supports in the jump.
- The athlete or the perrtiga touch the ground or the drop zone beyond the vertical plane of the upper line of the cap of the cajetin, without stripping the slat.
- After the takeoff puts the lower hand above the top or moves it to the top of the claw (action climbing through the perch).
- Suitable, stabilizes or folds with your hand the slat during the jump.
- Delay in the execution of the attempt.
The vaulter takes the pole a few centimeters before the end of it, makes a progressive run towards the pit, sticks the tip of the pole into a metal box located in the ground, with a depth of 20 cm, and jumps forward and arrives bending the pole; He places himself in a good position to receive its impulse and extends his body upwards using the impulse of his arms. He crosses the slat ventrally feet first and then lands on the mat. The athlete can move the high jump bar up to 80 cm from the perpendicular on the end of the box to adjust the depth of the bar.
This test, which requires good running speed, strong back muscles and great gymnastic ability, has been on the athletics program at the Olympic Games since its first edition in Athens 1896, in regards to the category masculine. The women's category did not debut until the Sydney 2000 edition.
It is the penultimate of the ten athletic events in the men's decathlon category and third in women, and also the penultimate of the seven men's heptathlon events (indoor track).
In 1994, Ukrainian Sergei Bubka, considered the greatest pole vaulter in history, became the first athlete to exceed 6 meters in height. Subsequently, he left the world record in 6.14 m outdoors (outdoor) and 6.15 m indoors (indoors). He was surpassed in 2014 by Renaud Lavillenie who reached 6.16 m (indoors). In 2020, the Swedish athlete Armand Duplantis broke both records, reaching 6.18 (indoor) in February, and achieved the world record on February 25, 2023 in Clermont-Ferrand, where he surpassed his own mark by achieving a jump of 6.22 m.
