Poland flag
The national flag of Poland (Polish: Flaga Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej) consists of two horizontal stripes of equal dimensions. The upper stripe is white and the lower one crimson. It has proportions of 5:8.
There is a version with the Polish national coat of arms, the state flag, which is used abroad as the flag of diplomatic representations and which is also the flag of the merchant navy.
The colors of the Polish flag come from the national coat of arms: the white stripe represents the white eagle and the crimson stripe represents the field color of the coat of arms. Its origins go back to the 13th century, when the white eagle was fixed on a red surface by the princes of the Piast dynasty. White and crimson are two of the Pan-Slavic colors that began to appear on shields, banners, and cavalry scripts, eventually appearing on military flags.
Regained independence, it has been the official flag of Poland since August 1, 1919.
